Be it known that I, F RED E. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paving Irons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paving irons for use in spreading and smoothing out 1 freshly laid paving material. 1

The object is to provide an iron of this sort which can be operated by hand, and having a self-contained heating unit, and generally to improve and simplify the construction and operation of the device.

One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following descrip tion and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the forward portion thereof.

The device comprises a base having a handle 11. Overlying the base is a heating compartment 12, into which extends a burner or torch 13 which is supplied with fuel from a tank 14- mounted on the handle. A pump 15 is preferably provided for applying air pressure to the fuel, and astandard 16 is hinged to the handle for supporting the device when not in use.

The ironbase has a rear extension 1. beveled as shown at 18 to remove and spread bumps or projections of paving material when the iron is drawn rearwardly. The forward end of the iron is preferably curved as shown at 19 to facilitate forward move ment of the iron.

The angle of the torch 13 is such that the flame is directed against the iron and serves to heat the same thoroughly so that smoothing and spreading of the paving ma-- terial will be facilitated. Preferably there is an opening 20 surrounding the torch or burner to admit air within the heating compartment, and the latter is provided with Serial No. 515,198.

ventilating flues 21 extending from the bottom of the compartment upwardly at each side and at the forward end of the iron. There is also a hinged cover 22 to permit ready access to the interior of the heating compartment.

The operation of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description. Various changes in the construction, and arrangement of the several parts may be employed, without-departing from the spirit of my invention as disclosed in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A paving iron comprising a base having a smoothing surface, a heating compartment overlying the same, a burner extending into the compartment, a handle for said base, a fuel tank for the burner mounted on said handle, said heating compartment having an opening surrounding the burner for the admission of air and being formed with ventilating fines extending upwardly from the bottom at both sides and one end thereof, and a hinged cover for said 00m partment.

2. A. paving iron comprising a base having a smoothing surface, connected side and end walls extending vertically from the base, partition members arranged parallel to one end and both side walls at a spaced distance therefrom and from the base, thereby forming fiues extending upwardly from the base, said partition members surrounding a combustion chamber, a cover therefor, a burner extending into said chamber, said cover constructed to provide for admission of air to the chamber to support combustion, and a handle connected with the structure whereby it may be operated for smoothing a pavement.
