Description

Dec. 4 9 1924. 1,518,093
- W. E. MENOLD CLOTHESLINE TERMINAL GRIP Filed Oct. 27, 1923 IN V EN TOR.
MlL/HM f: ME/YOLD ATTORNEY Patented cc. 2, 192 ia WILLIAM E. MENOLD, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
CLOTHESLINE-TERMINAL GRIP.
Application filed October 27, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. MnNoLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothesline- Terminal Grips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clothes-line terminal grips.
The principal object of this invention is to provide means for engaging and holding the end of a clothes-line against accidental withdrawal.
A still further object is to produce a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction and therefore cheap tomanufacture.
Another object is to provide means whereby the rope being held may be quickly released.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of my device, and
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section, showing the manner of operating my device.
Applicant is aware that many forms of clothes-line gripping devices have been placed upon the market. Most of these devices, however, have necessitated the tying of a knot in a rope or have entailed a comglicated clamping mechanism.
I have therefore sought to provide a clothes-line grip which may be operated by one hand, if necessary, and one which will not require the tying of knots or will not mutilate the rope.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a plate having openings 6 and 7 formed therein, for the purpose of fastening my device to a suitable support, such as a clothes-pole, building or the like.
Serial No. 671,211.
At 8 and 9 are shown wings preferably bent at right angles to the plate 5. These wings serve to pivot a U-shaped member 11 pivoted upon a. pin 12 extending through the Wings 8 and 9. This Ushaped member carries a pin 13 upon which is mounted a. pulley 14.
It will be noted by viewing Figures 1 and 2 that the pivotal pin 12 is mounted below the center of the U-shaped member 11. The reason for this isthat when a line, as shown at A, is passed over the pulley let and tl s end brought down between the plate 5 and the portion 16 of the U-shaped member, the pull of the rope against the pulley 1 1 will be great enough to cause the portion 16 to tightly engage or clamp the rope against the plate 5, the result being that a person may use one hand to pull downwardly upon the ends of the rope and immediately upon letting go a clamping action will take place.
When it is desired to: release the rope, it is merely necessary to push upon the up ward end of the U-shaped member or pulley 14 which will disengage the portion 16 from its contact with the rope.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple device and one which is very eflicient in operation.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape,
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention. I claim In a gripping device, plate. wings formed at right angles to said plate, a U- shaped member pivoted between said wings, the pivotal point of said ll-shaped member being nearer one end of said U-shaped mem her than the other in such a manner that the edge of the U-shaped member will contact a rope positioned between said Ushaped member and said plate, and a pulley pivoted to the remote end of said U-shaped member.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
'VVILLIAM E. MENOLD.
