ROPE-HOLDING DEVICE.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that ALPHONSE VANDER- DONCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in VRope- Holding Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinY to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in retaining devices and is in the nature of an improvement on my device disclosed in Patent 1,372,789, dated March 29, 1921.

In my patented device referred to, a

pulley block form of the invention was disclosed, but I have found that by slight modication my invention is adapted for use without the employment of a pulley and may also be used inbracket form such as upon a window sill for retaining awning ropes, etc. i In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated in Fig. 1 in perspective a. suitable form of my invention as applied to a rope retaining bracket for anrawning, and in Fig. 2 in side elevation a form of the device adapted for use upon a clothes line for tightening and retaining the same.

Referring to Fig. 1, 3 indicates the standard of the bracket provided with a base por tion 4 which may be secured upon the outside of the window sill by any suitable means such as a screw entering the hole 5. The upper end of the standardS is curved as indicated at 6 and is provided witha pin 7 for carrying the guide 8 through which a rope 9 such as an awning rope may be passed. The outer end of the awning is at the right of Fig. 1, the left side of the bracket shown in Fig. 1 facing the house, so that upon pulling upon the left end of the rope 9 the awning is drawn down taut and issecurely Vretained in that position until it is desired to release the same, when by engaging the standard 3 and the outer end 10 of the guide 8 between the thumb and forefnger, the -same may be drawn together releasing the rope 9 so that the awning may be drawn up out of the way, after which the slack in the rope 9 may be again .taken up by draw- Ving in on the left end of the'said rope. 11

indicates a cut-away portion in the guide 8 for introducing and removing the rope instead of threading the same through the guide 8.

In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the side opening 11 shown in Fig. 1 has been eliminated, although of course it will be readily understood that it may be provided therein. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the lever 12 is provided with a ring 13 at the free end to engage one end of the clothes line 4, this lever being pivoted at 15 within the casing or guide 16 as shown and being provided at its inner end with a curved toothed surface such as 17, much the same as in Fig. 1. 'Ihe guide or housing 16 is preferably provided with an inwardly curved wall 18 as shown upon the inside of which the kotherend of the rope 4 is secured as shown. At one end of the housing is a finger piece 19 which when drawn in the direction of the'lever 12 between the fingers releases the left end of the rope 4 allowing the same to be withdrawn if desired, whereas when the free end of the rope 4 is drawn through the Ydevice rightwardly looking at Fig. 2, the same is prevented from withdrawing therefrom by the jamming of the same between the inwardly curved surface 18 and the toothed end 17 of the lever 12, thereby providing a simple,

eliicient,` and secure binding or retaining means for taking up slack in the line and one which can be readily and instantly re leased with one hand.

Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

I claim:-

1. In a device of the class described, a standard adapted t'o be secured at its base to a support, the upper part of said standard provided with teeth, a housing pivotally secured upon said standard adjacent said upper part and providing passagefor a rope, said housing projecting laterally so as to bind said rope against said teeth when said rope is taut and adapted to release said rope when depressed. i

In ay device of the class described, a standard adapted to be secured at its base to a support, the upper part of said standard provided with teeth, a housing pivotally se- 5 cured upon said standard adjacent said upper part and providing passage for a rope, seid housing projecting laterally so as to bind said rope against said teeth when said rope is taut and adapted to release said rope when depressed, and one side of said hous- 10 ing open for the introduction of said rope.
