,UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN SILVERMAN, OF CHATTANQOGA. TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF 'IO J'. RUSSEL EAR?, OF CHA'ITANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
Application filed November 7, 1923.. Serial No. 673,257.
To all wlw/m t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SILVER- MAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Combs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair dressing and has spe-cial reference to a device for straightening wavy or kinky hair.
More particularly the invention relates to an improved hair straightening comb.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a comb of this character having separate metallic teeth secured in a position in an improved and novel manner.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a novel assembly arrangement for such a comb wherein a single bolt or pin is used to hold all of the parts together.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specificall)v claimed.
In the accompai'lying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views. and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a comb constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through such a comb.
Figure 3 is a section ou the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4t is a section on the line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a disassembled view showing a slight modification of certain parts of th-e device.
The comb as herein shown comprises a back han/ing socket openings 11 at each end and provided on its' under side with. a. channel 12. At each end of the back is provided an end plate or tooth 13 having a projecting pin 141 fitting in the respective sockets 11. These pins may either be made integrally with the teeth 13 or may be simply engageable in recesses 15 as shown in Figure 5. In each of the end teeth 13 is also provided a shank receiving opening 16.
In connection with this back a series of teeth 17 are provided which have their base or butt portions fitted in 'the channel 12 and are kept in properly spaced relation by spacers 18 similarly fitted in said channel. These teeth and spacers are provided with openings registering with the` openings 16 so that a rod or shank 19 may be slipped through said openings and hold the parts together. On one end of this rod is provided a head 20 which bears against the outer surface of one of the end teeth while the other end carries a tubular washer 21 bearing against the other end tooth. A handle 22 is fitted on the projecting end of the shank and a nut 23 is used to draw all the parts together and bind them in their assembled relation as clearly seen in Figure 2.
In use the device is first heated to the desired degree. It is then grasped by the handle, which is preferably of wood or the like, and the hair is combed until the kinks or waves are straightened out, the heating operation being repeat-ed from time to time as may be found necessary.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a comb of the class described, a ba ck, end teeth having pin and socket interloclfing engagement with the ends of the back, alternate intermediate and separate teeth and spacers between said end teeth, a headed pin passing tlrrough the end and inter-V mediate teeth and spacers and having its headed end resting on one of the end teeth, and means carried by the other end of the pin for clamping the parts together.
2. In a comb of the class described, a back having a socket at each end and provided with a channel in its under side, end teeth each carrying a pin engaging in its respective socket, alternate intermediate teeth and the pin bearing :against the remaining endV Spacers having base poi'tlons, fitted 1n sald tooth, a handle on said projecting end encha-nnel, a pin passing through the end and gaglng the Washer, and a nut at the butt end 10 intermediate teeth and the spacers Iand proof the handle screwed on the pin to kbind the jecting at one end, a head on the vremaining parts together. end ofthepin leaiirig aga'instonee'd tooth, In testimony whereof lI fli'x ni'51,;sxvik'g11ature. a tubnlar Washer onthe pro-jeoti'ng end of BENJAMIN SILVERMN.
