To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OSCAR R. ALTWEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Asheville, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Im roved Comb, of which the following is a 111], clear, and exact description.

Thls invention relates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to combs de signed for straightening short kinky hair, an object of the invention being to provide a comb having a pair of stationary parallel tooth members having registering teeth and between said members provide a longitudinally movable tooth member or comb with improved means for moving the same longitudinally to regulate or control the distance between the faces or surfaces of the teeth so that any desired gripping action may be had on the hair, and hence, when the comb is heated, the kinky hair will be straightened out when the comb is moved through the hair.

With this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

My improved comb compr ses in the main three comb members; namely, stationar comb members 1 and 2 and a movable com member 3. The stationary comb members 1 and 2 are secured together by means of screws or bolts 4 and are provided in their inner faces with registering recesses forming slots 5 in the teeth 6 of the stationary comb member. The movable comb member 3 fits within and is accommodated in the slots 5 formed in members 1 and 2 and the teeth 7 of the movable comb member 3 are normally in alinement with and registerin with the teeth of the stationary com member.

Shank members 8 are formed on the comb members 1 and 2 and are recessed or made hollow to accommodate an arm or extension 9 on the movable comb member 3. This arm 9 is provided with an opening 10 receiving one end of an operating lever 11. A handle 12 is secured on the shanks 8 and is provided with a clamping collar 13 which has perforated lugs 14 in which the lever 11 is pivoted between its ends on a rivet 15. A coil spring 16 is interposed between the rear or free end of the lever 11 and this spring is seated at one end in a recess 17 in the handle and at the other end engages over a stud 18 on the lever to maintain the parts in proper relative position.

The lever 11 at its point of engagement with the arm 9 is made with a finger 19 which projects into the opening 10 above r1 ferred to so that the pivotal movement of the lever imparts a longitudinal movement to the movable cam member 3.

By reference particularl to Fig. 3, i; will be noted that the mova le cam member 3 is practically inclosed between the stationary comb members 1 and 2 so that when the movable comb member is moved by the lever 11, its teeth 7 will press the hair not only against the stationary teeth 6, but also into the slots or openings formed in said stationary teeth so as to effectually remove the kinkle or crimp in the hair and exert the desired pressure and gripping action. The

surfaces of the teeth may e made roughened as shown most clearly in Fi s. 1 and 4 so as to increase the gripping action of the teeth.

In Fig. 4, I illustrate a modification in which I provide a stationary comb member 20 with a movable comb member 21, the latter having a slot or slots 22 therein for the reception of screws 23 screwed into the stationary member and said stationary member having a longitudinal recess in its upper portion, as shown at 24, for the accommodation of the ion 'tudinal bar 25 of the toothcarr ing mova 1e comb member.
