Description

Nov. 25 1924- E. B. TURNER SAMiLING DEVICE Filed Oct. 31 1922 INVENTOR WITNESSES ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 25, 1924.
UNITELE STATES EDWIN BRANCH TURNER, OF BIRD CITY, KANSAS.
SAMPLING DEVICE.
Application filed Gctober 31, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. Ecru); B. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Bird City. in the county of Cheyenne and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and us ful Improvements in Sampling Devices, or: which the following is a specification.
This invention relates t a vice.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character simple in construction, and which is adapted for preparing sample seeds or the like.
t is also an object of the invention that the device he of such a size as may be easily carried about in a persons pocket.
It is a further and important object of the invention that the device he of such a construction that it will permit an easy reception of the seeds to be sampled.
Other objects relating to details of construction will hereinafter appear.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the lines 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the device may consist in a casting of aluminum or other suitable material, said casting being generally indicated by the reference numeral C, and being in the form of a plate having formed upon its front face a plurality of pockets P, said pockets being arranged in rows adjacent each side of the plate. As shown, the pockets in each row are three in number, however, this is optional with the manufacturer of the device: The casting is preferably rectangular in shape, as shown, and in order to form the pockets P there extends about the entire edge of the casting a flange 10. The flange 10 in conjunction with the two longitudinally extending ribs 11 and the cross ribs 12 serve to form the pockets P. The plate casting intermediate the ribs M is formed with a depressed portion 12' which extends the entire length of the casting and is preferably semi-circular in cross section as shown. The lower end of this depression is closed as at 13, and its upper end terminates in a scoop-like protrusion sampling de- Serial No. 598,231.
The depressed portion 12 together with its end wall 13 is adapted to form apocket or receptacle P.
The flange 10 has formed therewith a upon the flange 10 occurringabouttheca t ing 0 and the set screws 16 ma bemanip ulated to engage edge portions of'the cover K whereby to clamp the same in position."
The cover plate may have a fro's'tedo'r ground portion occurring over each of the pockets 1 as at 17, and upon this there may be placed suitable indicia to indicate the grade of seed in the pocket therebeneath.
in the use of the present device, each of the pockets C may be filled with seed which 8 is of a standard quality of grade, and this seed may be known by the indicia upon the frosted port-ion 17 of the plate K. The plate is removed in order to place the seeds in the pockets P. When it is desired to compare a seed, the grade or quality of which is unknown, the scoop-like portion 14; may be used to fill the pocket P. The seed in the pocket P may now be carefully compared with the seeds in the different pockets P, and in this way the seed in the pocket P is graded.
While I have shown my particular device for use in connection with comparing seeds,
it is to be understood that I am aware of the fact that the same may be used with equal advantage for comparing similar things. Also it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the particular construction illustrated and described as indicated by the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, comprising an elongatetd and open top receptacle, and means for providing a plurality of pockets adjacent each side of the receptacles, said receptacle having its one end open and rovided with a scoop.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a plate-like casting having a depression extending centrally and longitudinally thereof, ribs upon one face of said The 65 casting whereby to form pockets upon each side of the depression, and a removable transparent cover plate for said pockets and depression.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a plate-like casting having a depression extending longitudinally and centrally thereof, and terminating at its one ent in a spout while its other end is closed whereby to form an elongated pocket or receptacle, ribs upon the face 01"? said plate corresponding to that in which the depression is formed whereby to provide pockets upon each side of the depression, and a transparent cover ior said pockets and depression.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a plate-like casting having formed centrally and longitudinally thereof a depression to provide an elongated pocket or receptacle ribs upon the face of said plate in which the depression occurs to provide pockets adjacent each side of the depression, lugs extending from the casting, a removable transparent cover for the pockets and depression, and means whereby indicia may be placed upon said cover to indicate the contents of said pockets.
5. In a device of the character described,
an elongated and open top receptacle, a closure for one end of said receptacle, and extensions whereby to provide a plurality of sockets upon each side of the receptacle.
6. A device of the character described comprising an elongated and open top receptacle, a closure for one end of said receptacle, a spout formation at the other end of said receptacle, and extension means whereby to provide a plurality of sockets upon.
each side of the receptacle. I
T; A device of the character described comprising an elongated open top receptacle, a closure for one end of said receptacle, a spout extension at the other end of said receptacle and extension means whereby to provide a plurality of sockets upon each side of the receptacle.
8. A device of the character described comprisin an elongated open top receptacle, a closure for one end of said receptacle, aspout extension at the other end of said receptacle and extension means whereby to provide a plurality of sockets upon each side of the receptacle, and a transparent closure for said receptacle adapted tobe adjustably secured thereto.
