To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARRIE EDGARDA KIDDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Smith, in the county of Harlan, State of Kentucky, have invented an Improvement in Bags, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

My invention relates to bags and particularly but not exclusively to the type of bag largely carried by women and known as shopping or opera bags. My invention, however, is not limited to these types but may be employed in connection with bags such as school bags or the like for carrying more bulky objects. It is particularly adapted to bags constructed of stiff or heavy material, such. as leather or stiif or heavy fabric.

My invention will be best understood from the following description when read in light of the accompanying drawings of the specific embodiment of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, while the scope of my invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings Fig. 1 shows a preferred embodiment of one type of bag constructed according to my invention, the bag being shown in elevation and in closed position;

Referring to the drawings and to the preferred embodiment of one type of bag constructed according to my invention, I have shown a container 1 of flexible material closed at the bottom and open at the top to provide a mouth 2. Serving as a handle for supporting the bag I provide a gathering string 3, which is secured, by means of a plurality of loops, to the upper edge of the bag about the mouth. v

I prefer to cause one side of the bag to assume a flattened shape when the mouth is stitches adjacent the mouth. These pleats cause the bag to assume a flat shape when the loops are drawn together as shownby Fig. 2. For causing the pleats to bend outwardly as illustrated by Fig. 3 away from the material between the pleats I position adjacent each pleat the loops 7, the loops lying on the outside of the pleats as shown by Fig. 6. When the loops are moved into the position shown by Fig. 3, the loops 7 will pull the pleats 5 more or less depending upon the stiifness of the material of the bag against the portions 9 of the bag. lVhen rather stiif material is employed, such as leather, the loops 7 may be twisted as illustrated in F ig. 6 to exert a greater force for turning the pleats 5.

The loops 11 when the bag is gathered support the side of the bag opposite the pleats 5 and by their position cause the bag to fold to form the end pleats 13 and the side pleats l5 and 17. It will be noticed that the pleats 15 are drawn toward the side of the bag having the pleats'5, while the central side pleat 17 is normal to said side. The flatness of the pleats and the extent of this effect depends to a large degree on the stiffness of the material.

Preferably, the loops 7 and 11 are made wide and stiff enough so that they will overcome the stiffness of the material of the bag and cause it to fold.

In order that the best results may be i secured it is desirable that the loops shall be positioned on the ring in such manner that the loops 7 are on the outside as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2. To insure this position of the loops the ring in the present embodiment of my invention is made oval or elliptical in shape with a major axis of such dimension as to be greater than the space between the loops '7 when stretched apart, as is illustrated by Fig.4.

It will be understood I have disclosed a bag which is of simple construction not likely to get out of order and which can be readily opened and closed by the user when desired and which cannot be opened accidentally when in normal use without the knowledge of the user.

Although I have described for purposes of illustration one specific embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I am not limited thereby to its particular details but that wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Claims:

1. A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a mouth, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid material at said mouth, and a plurality of relatively wide flat flexible loops distributed around the periphery of said mouth for attaching said bag to said rounded element, said loops loosely fitting said gathering element thereby to permit said bag to fold to flat shape when said gathering element is turned to vertical position.

2. A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a mouth, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid material at said mouth and secured to said mouth by flexible loops, and the material of said bag having a pair of longitudinal pleaits for causing said bag to assume a flat shape when said loops are drawn together.

3. A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a mouth and having a pair of spaced pleats, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid material, and flexible loops for securing said mouth to said gathering element including twisted loops positioned adjacent said pleats.

4. A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a mouth, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid n'raterial secured to said mouth by loose, flexible loops, said b ag having a pair of sewn pleats "for causing the material between said pleats to assume a flait shape when said loops are drawn together, and said loops including a loop at each plea-t for bending said pleats away from the material between said pleats when said loops are drawn togethe 5. A bag or" flexible material providing at one end thereoi a mouth, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid material secured to said mouth by loose, flexible loops, said bag having a pair of sewn pleats for causing the material between said pleats to assume a flat shape when said loops are drawn together, and said loops including a twisted loop at each pleat for bending said pleats away from the material between said pleats when said loops are drawn together.

6. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth, a gathering elementof substantially rigid material for said mouth, said bag having means for causing a portion of said bag to assume a. flat shape when said mouth is gathered, means for securing said portion to said gatheringelement, and spaced flexible means for attaching the. remaining portion of said mouth to said gathering element for causing remaining portion to fold toward or against said first mentioned por tion when said mouth is gathered.

7. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth, a gathering element of substantially rigid material for said mouth, said bag having means for causing a portion oi said bug to assume a flat shape when said mouth is gathered, means for securing said portion to said gathering element, and spaced flexible means for attaching the remaining portion of said mouth to said gathering element for causing said remaining portion to fold into a plurality of pleats against said flat portion when said mouth is gathered.

8. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth, a substantially rigid gathering element for said mouth, said bag having means for causing a portion of said bag to assume a flat shape when said mouth is gathered, flexible means for securing said portion to said gathering element, and spaced flexible means for attaching the remaining portion of said mouth to said gathering element for causing said remaining portion to fold into end pleats turned toward said flat portion and a central pleat normal to said flat portion.

9. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth, means for gathering said mouth including a substantially rigid gathering element and loose, flexible loops attaching said gathering element to said month, said gathering element having a rigid portion on which said loops lie when said mouth is gathered, and said loops being so positioned that when said mouth is gathered the loops for one side of said b ag lie together and the loops for the other side of said bag lie at. opposite sides of the loops for said first mentioned side.

10. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth, means including a substantially rigid gathering element having a rigid portion, loose, flexible loops for attaching one side of the mouth of said bag to said gathering ele ment, a. pair of loops for the other side of said mouth, and each of said pair being so disposed that when all of said loops are drawn together said pair of loops will be spaced by the other loops and hold the side to which they are attached in a flattened shape.

11. A bag of flexible material providing a mouth at one end thereof, a. substantially rigid gathering element at said mouth and a pluralityof relatively \VlClG' flexible loops distributed around the periphery of said opening, said loops loosely fitting said gathering element to permit free movement of said gathering element in any direction relative to said loops.

A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a month, an elliptical gathering element of substantially rigid material at said mouth, a plurality of relatively Wide flexible loops loosely fitting said gathering element *to permit free movement of said element relative to said loops and a plurality of sewn pleats for causing said bag to assume a flat shape when said gathering element is turned from horizontal to vertical position.

13. A bag of flexible material providing at one end thereof a mouth, a rounded gathering element of substantially rigid material at said mouth, a plurality of relatively Wide flexible loops for attaching said bag to said gathering element, and one or more of said loops normally twisted, thereby to cause said bag to pleat and assume a flat shape When said gathering element is turned to a Vertical position.
