BENJAMIN D. STEVENS, OF LAW'RENOE, MASSACHD SETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURIAL-CASKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,321, dated May 96, 1874; application filed March 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJ. D. STEVENS, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and Com monwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a BuriaLOasket, of which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to make a casket the panels of which can be changed at pleasure without the necessity of taking the frame apart, and at the same time the frame may be taken apart for the purpose of shipping the same.
My invention is more fully described in the following specification, and shown in the an nexed drawings, in which Figure l is a side view of the casket, in which B is the top rail; 0, the panel; D, the lower rail; E, the movable post or stay.
Fig. 2 is a top View, showing the top rail B and the cover A.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing the manner in which the panel C is put inside, and against the rail B D, and the manner of securing the post E to the rail B D.
Fig. 4 is a face view of the post E, showing the tenons e e c c, which hold it firmly in the rails 13 D.
Fig. 6 is a back or inside view of the post E, showing the metal strap a, which is fastened to the post E by the screws 1) b. The
end of the strap a is bent to a proper angle, as shown in Fig. 5, in order to fasten it to the rail B D, as shown in Fig. 3, it being secured thereto by the screws 0 c.
The frame is so constructed that it can be taken down for shipment by removing screws 0 c, and then lifting off the top rail B, then removing the posts E, thus allowing it to be packed in small compass. The panel (3, being made of elastic material, is easily replaced by the same operation, allowing any design of panel to be used, as may be desired.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a coffin in such a manner as to allow its being taken apart, as in an invention of Avery & Delill, patented April 7, A. D. 1868, in which it is put together by tongues, and the panels are placed in grooves in the frame, and I make no claim thereto.
hat I do claim as my invention is- In a casket-frame, the combination of the rail B D, the posts E, the metal strap a, the screws 1) Z) and o c, and the tenons e c e 0, arranged in the manner and for the purposes described in the foregoing specification.
BENJN. D. STEVENS.
