Description
ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 29,1874.
W S WOOD Burlal Case Fasteners WITNESSE8=' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM s. woon, or NEWTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURlAL-CASE FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,482, dated September 29, 1 74; application filed September 12, 1874.
OAsE B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. W001), of Newtown, Queens county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Burial-Case Fastener, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide means for holding burial-cases fast in their boxes when they are packed and being trans ported or stored; and it consists of a bracket, of wood and metal, made in any form so that it will hold the case by entering two or more of the screw-holes on the sides or endsof the case, which are made for fastening the body of the case together.
Figure 1 represents an end view of the burial-case and a cross-section of the packingbox. Fig. 2 is a side View of a fastening bracket or shoulder, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the burial-case. B is the packing-box. O G are two flanges; the upper flange is on the cover, and the lower flange is on the body of the case. The cover and the body of the case are fastened together by means of screws through these flanges. A portion of the screws are left out'when the case is packed, and the points D of the bracket or holder are placed in these holes, and the wood E (to which the point is attached) is screwed or fastened to the box, substantially as seen in Fig. 1. The cover G of the box is next put on, which cover bears upon the tops of the holders, as seen in Fig. 1. Any desired number of brackets, fasteners, or holders may be employed. In practice, two on each side and one at each end are found sufficient.
The brackets or holders may be made as represented in the drawing, the points being cast with the flanged piece F, and fastened by one or more screws or nails, as seen; but I do not confine myself to this or any particular way of forming them. They may be made entirely of iron, either cast or wrought, and attached to or be confined in the box in any other manner. The object is to prevent the highly-finished surface of the burial-case from being marred or bruised while in the box.
When fastened, as shown in the drawing, it will be seen that the case cannot move in the box, and it may be transported any distance with perfect safety.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new a'nddesire to secure by Letters Patent- A bracket, fastener, 0r holder constructed with one or more points or pins, arranged to enter the screw-holes in a burial-case, and be confined to or in the packing-box, so as to prevent the movement of the case, substantially as shown and described.
Y WILLIAM S. WOOD. Witnesses:

ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
