.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY HETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for the Panels of \Vagon- Tops, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved construction of wagon tops, whereby the panels are held firmly and securely, cannot be cracked by warping and stretching, and can be removed for repairs or painting and easily replaced.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and'details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a wagon-top. Fig. 2 is a front view of a bow and the angleirons on the vertical parts thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the wagon-box through the panels and bows. Fig. 4 isan enlarged detail horizontal sectional view ofone shank of a how and part of a side panel held thereon. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing parts of side and end panels.

A represents the body of the wagon, on the sides of which body the lower ends of the shanks of the bows B are held. To the front or rear edges of the shanks of the bows the angle-irons O are secured by means of screws,

In case the wagon-top is to be provided with side panels, D, only, said panels D are provided in the ends with the vertical grooves F,
of sufficient size to receive the flanges a of theangleirons, and such distances from the inner faces of the panels that when the flanges a are in the grooves the inner sides of the panels rest against the outer sides of the vertical shanks of the bows, as shown in Fig. 4. For the intermediate bows the panels are provided with vertical L-shaped grooves G, into which the projecting parts of the angle-irons fit.
In case the wagon-top is to be provided with side and end panels, D H, two angleirons, G, are secured to the front and rear bows, one angle-iron on each bow projecting beyond the side of the bow and the other beyond the rear or front edge of the bow. The end and side panels, D and H, are in this case provided with vertical L-shaped grooves F near the ends for receiving the projecting parts of the angle-irons.
The panels are secured on the bows in the following manner: They are first fitted very accurately and provided with the vertical grooves. Then the angle-irons are slipped into the grooves, and are then fastened by means of screws to the vertical shanks of the bows.
The wooden panels can give and stretch in all directions and will not crack or warp. In case a panel is broken, it can be removed and at once replaced by another without requiring the wagon to be brought to the repair-shop.
T-irons may be used in place of the angleirons; but I prefer the latter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a wagon-top, the combination, with the bows, of angleirons secured to the front and rear edges of the front and rear bows, respectively, an angle iron secured to one edge of an intermediate bow, and wooden panels provided in the ends with longitudinal grooves for receiving the flanges of the angle-irons on the front and rear bows, and a vertical groove on its inner surface between the ends for re ceiving the flange of the angle-iron on the i11- termediate bow, substantially as set forth.
