ERNEST GEANT, OE SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE l'l'lES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,281, dated May 25, 1874; application filed March 26, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST GRANT, of Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-Bale Ties, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of bale-ties which are constructed from a hoop Or band, having at Or near each of its ends slots of a rectangular form, Which adapts the ends Of the band to be connected together by engaging the slots with each other.
The invention has for its Object tO furnish a bale-tie which shall be stronger and more durable than those heretofore constructed.
To this end the invention consists in forming in one end of the metallic band a series Of U-shaped slots, and at the other end of said band a single slot of a corresponding U shape or form, as a means of securing the band when applied to a bale, the slots at both ends of the band extending to the Amiddle of the same, so that when the single slotted end is interlocked with one of the series of slots at the opposite end the edges Of the band will be iu line with each other.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation Of a bale of cotton having my bale-tie applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached view thereof, and Fig. 3 a view of a modification of the bale-tie.
The letter A designates a bale band Or hoop, which is made of -plate metal in the ordinary manner. At one end of the band is formed a series of U-shaped slots or openings, B, which extend from the edge to the middle Of the band. The opposite end of the band is provided With a single U-shaped slot, C, which is .located at a suitable distance from the end, and is designed to interlock Withone of the yseries of slots at the other end of the band,
the part beyond the slot being tucked or passed beneath theband. The slots at both ends Of the band being of a corresponding Width and located on opposite ends of the same, the two ends will, when interlocked together, be so located that their edges do not project beyond each other, thus avoiding the formation Of projecting'edges, and insuring a more even distribution of the Strain upon vwhich means the end of the band is guided in place into the slot at the Opposite end. By
constructing the band with U-shaped slots,
instead Of square or rectangular-shaped Ones, the band is rendered much stron ger, inasmuch as there are no corners at the inner edge of the slot, which is very apt to crack Or break and render the band useless. This cannot occur with the U-shaped slots, as their inner edges are of a curved form, and there are nO edges from which a break could commence in the band.
I claim as my invention- A bale or packing band having on one side, near its end, a Series of U-shap'ed notches or recesses for interlocking with the Opposite end of said band, having one or more corresponding notches or recesses, and Otherwise constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my handthis 16th day of March, 1874.
ERNEST GRANT.
