SCREEN DOOR OR WINDOW.
Application filed April 25, 1922. Serial No. 556,399.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW M. ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redmond, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Screen Door or lVindow, of which the following is a specification.
By way of explanation it may be stated that, as is well known, the screen on a screen door is subjected to severe use of one kind and another, notably in view of the fact that persons push the door to an open position through the instrumentality of the screen, rather than by thrusting against the door frame proper. In view of the foregoing, it is the object of this invention to provide a simple means whereby a screen may be attached securely to a door frame.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the intention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The numeral 1 denotes the frame'rail of a door, window or other closure, and in this connection, it is to be observed that the device, in use, is not confined to a door frame. In the frame rail 1, an external groove 2 is formed. The numeral 3 marks a screen. An inner strip 4, preferably made of metal is provided, the screen 3 being bent across the strip 4 to form a flange 5 in the screen, the flange 5 abutting against the frame rail 1 at the back of the groove therein. Securing'elements 6, such as nails or tacks pass through the screen 3, the strip 4 and its flange 5, and enter the frame rail 1, the screen and the strip thus being securely attached to the frame rail 1. outer strip 7 is placed, the outer strip being located in the groove 2, and being made of wood, if desired, to correspond with the finish of the frame rail 1. Securing elements 8 which may be tacks, nails or the like, pass through the outer strip 7, the screen 3, the inner strip t, and its flange 5 and enter the frame raill.
The general construction of the device is such that the edge of the screen 3 will be held securely on the framerail 1, the outer strip 7 serving to cover, protect and hold in place, the securing elements 7 whereby the screen 3 is held immediately on the frame rail 1.
In assembling the device, it is suggested that-the following plan be carried out: lay the screen 3 flat down on a table, with the flanges 5 in the same plane as the body of the screen. Place the strips 1 on the flanges 5 around the edges of the screen. Raise the screen 3 a little at the edges and push the tacks 6 down through the strips 4 and the flanges 5. Foldthe screen along the inner edges of the strips 4 to bring the strips 4 on top of the body of the screen 3, and to bring the flanges 5 on top of the strips Finally, put the screen on the frame 1 with the tacks 6 in the groove 2, and. hammer in the tacks. lVhat is claimed is In a device of the class described, a frame rail having an external groove at the angle defined by one side surface and one transverse surface of the frame rail,an inner strip in the groove, a screen in the groove and bent upon itself to form a flange located between the strip and the back of the groove, a securing element disposed ap proximately at right angles to the screen, the securing element passing through the screen and the strip and the flange and entering the frame rail, an outer strip housed completely in the groove and coveringthe securing element, and a securing member passing through both strips, the screen and the flange, and entering the frame rail.
