MATI-IEW J'. PHILIPPSEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 H. L. HILLS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
WATER-TIGHT HINGE-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten Nev. er, iena.
Application filed February 19, 191'?. Serial No. 149,641.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW J. PHILIPP- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the countyof Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Tater-Tight Hinge- Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a hinge joint designed to be watertight and also to be so con cealed when used in certain places that when in openposition it will not show any marred or damaged surface.'
The invention is adapted to a wide variety of uses, whichI haveillustrated by showing the same used both as a hinge. for automobile hoods and as a ridge cap or cover for roofs.
The invention consists in providing two leaves, which may or may `not be integral with the structure covered or united, which is bent both to form an angle along the ad joining margins of the leaves and also'to increase the thickness of a portion of the margin, fand in inclosing this angled and .thickened portion in a suitable casing.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectionalv view through aportion of an automobile hood, with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section through my hinge joint.
Fig. 3 is an end view.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 0f Fig.
Fig. 5 is al plan view of the portion shown in Fig. 4.
Fig.' Gis a sectional view showing the leaf, whichas shown in Fig. 1 is also a part of the hood top, and it will be understood that if applied to ldoors or to other forms of covers the door or lid tmay itself form a part of the hinge, being made integral with one leaf when so desired.`
Along one edge each leaf is bent vover at right angles as at 2, and is then bent back on itself as at 3 thus increasing the thickness of the marginal portion, but the portions bent back stop short of the body, portions 1.
A semi-cylindrical casing 4 is formed having a length equal to the length of the marginal portions 2 and longitudinally slotted as at 5 along its flattened face 6.
-verted as compared with pins carried by-the end At the ends of the casing the Hattened faces 6 are cut away as at 7, and into the But this feature is optional and if desired said blocks may have the pins omitted and may beinserted into the ends of the casing without cutting away any portion acting as stops for the bent portionsV of the leaves and to prevent exit of water. erably secured by screws. l
`When used as a ridge cap the device is inits use on a hood, and of course is of greater length and size. In Fig. 5 I have shown its use on a roof 10.
rIhey are pref- -B`ut the only change 1s in size and position,
not in construction of any part of the joint. It may be used wherever a joint of this character would be desirable, and when used on an automobile hood presents a neat ap .pearance as no checked painted surface is exposed when the hood is opened andit is lalso substantially water tight.
at 'I claim is s 1. A hinge joint. comprising two leaves having bent marginal portions, and a slotted casing adapted to receive said portions.
2. A joint of the kind described comprising leaves having bent marginal portions,
and a Slotted casing receiving said bent por tions, said casing slot. l
3. A joint of the kind described comprising two leaves, a longitudinally slotted case,-
means for closing the ends of the casing, closures, and flanges on the leaves projecting into said slot and working freely in said casing.`
4. A joint comprising two leaves, a slot-` adjacent marginal portions ofA ted casing, the. leaves being bent and slidable insaid slot, and retaining means placed in thev casing ends to check sliding movement of said bent portions.
5. A joint of the kind described comprisportions working freely in the 5 greater Ythan the Width of the slot.
ing leaves having bent -sind thickened maran angle, said bent portions bein bent back ginal portions, sind a longitudinally slotted upon themselves, and alongitu inally slotf l easing adapted to receive said .bent portions, ted casing adapted to receive said .bent mar- 10 the thickened portions having a; thickness i'na portions, as and for the purpose set Ort Y 6. A 'joint of the kind. described compris- In testimony whereof I aix my signature. ing leaves'having marginal portions bent at- MATHEW J. PHILIPPSEN.
