Description

L. BOWMAN.
CONCEALED HINGE.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 20, 1914.
1,152,000. Patent-ed Al lg. 31, 1915.
TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LLOYD BOWMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HA L! WILLIAM E. EASTMAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
CONCEALED HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
-- Application filed November 20, 1914. Serial No. 873,083.
- exact description of the same, such as will provide enable others sln'lled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. My invention relates to an improvement in concealed hinges and is particularly designed for use on automobile bodies.
The object of my invention is to provide a device adapted to be concealed in the frame and the door of an automobile body and which is relatively strong, simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to suitable means adapted to restrict the openingof the hinge, whereby the door cannot be carelessly thrown back in contact with the body of the vehicle to mar its fin- ,ish,-the construction being such that the coacting leaf members of the hinge while free to open within prescribed limits contact with each other to limit the opening of the door.
Other advantages and improvements will hereafter appear.
.In the drawings accompanying this specification: Figure 1, is a perspective-view of the hinge opened. Fig. 2, is a perspective view of one leaf member of the hinge. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of the other leaf member of the hinge. Fig. 4, is a horizontal sectional view through the hinge and a fragmentary portion of the door and its casing, showing the door closed. Fig. 5, is a similar horizontal sectional view (taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1) showing the door open.
Referring now to the letters of reference placed upon the drawings: A, denotes one leaf of the hinge pierced by a pintle G. B, a co-acting leaf member provided with a substantiall arc-shaped tongue B integral therewith and cutting the body of the leaf B as indicated .at b.
1 6' is an eye on the end of the tongue B to receive the hinge pintle, connecting the partially formed by.
respective members of the hinge together.
Patented Aug. 31, 1915.
The member A, is also partially cutaway at a to provide an opening through which the tongue B of the coacting leaf member may pass, leaving a cross bar a between the cutaway portion and the hinge pivot to serve as an abutment for the flattened portion 6 of the tongue, whereby the degree of opening of the hinge may be limited.
D, denotes a recess formed in the door casing to receive the tongue B, when the door is closed.
It will be apparent that as the leaf members of the hinge are lodged respectively in the opposing recessed portions of the door and easing, the hinge will be concealed from view when the door is closed and that upon opening the door the flattened portion 6 of the tongue B will contact with the bar a of the coacting leaf member, to limit the degree of opening of the door and thereby preventing it from being carelessly thrown back into contact with the body of the vehicle whereby the finish may be marred.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is A hinge of the type described, including pintle articulated leaves, one leaf having a central quadrant-like tongue, with its free end terminating in an eye, said tongue being of right-lined formation for a portion thereof intermediate said eye and its curvature, and the other leaf having in its outer longitudinal edge a central recess arranged to receive, and provide for the movement v therethrough of said tongue, said leaf also having intermediate its pintle-receiving eyes, a second recess arranged to receive the eye of said tongue for the alinement of said eye with the aforesaid eyes and the reception of the pintle, the curved or quadrantlike portion of said tongue spanning the resultant rentrant angle between the leaves,
at points inwardly from the outer longitudinal or vertical edges of said leaves, to
allow of the leaves taking a relatively paral lel and right-angled position, respectively.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two wltnesses.
LLOYD BOWMAN.
