' Application filed septem'ber 88, 1928. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN T. Basnm, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Threeblank.
Fingered Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
three finger mittens and the present invention is an improvement upon my U. S. Patent No. 1,378,? 58, issued May- 17, 1921.
One object of the present invention is to provide a reversible mitten, 1. e., one that can be worn equally as well on either hand so that when the side which constituted the alm of one mitten when worn on the right and becomes nearly worn out the mitten can .be transferred to the left hand and thereby greatly prolong the life of said mitten over that of. the one disclosed by my patent above referred to which is adapted for use on one hand only and mifi therefore be made in pairs for the rig and left hands.
Another object is to reinforce the mitten to better advantage so as to get lon er wear than is possible with a mitten ma e of the same material and in accordance with my aforementioned patent.
Other objects will hereinafter appear and v in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the body blank used 1n the manufactureof the invention.
Fig. 2 .is' a view similar to Fi gussets and a reinforcement add a Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of one of the ssets. I
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of a reinforcement-for the thumb blank of the mitten.
Fi .5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the t umb: blank added.
Fig. 6 is a reduced detail of the thumb Fig. 7 is an elevation-of the completed mitten. Referring now in detail to the various parts, 2 designatesthe body blank cut from one piece of material and both sides Sand which are alike. The, side 3- of the blank 2' has several ger sections 1, 6 nd 8 j roject for wardly therefrom. e sie. 5 has forand its marggns are stitched together as 1 ith indicated at 3 sides of the thumb 28 are :1
thumb opening 16 extending from its mar- My invention relates to improvements in is a separate piece and may be of sufiicient size to cover a large area of the sides 3 and 4 of the blank 2. A gusset 2A is secured to one side of the finger section A and to the adjacent side of a fin er section 6 by stitching 25, while a secon gusset 26 is secured to the opposite side of the finger section 6 and to the ad'acent side of the fingfier section 8,'by stitc g 27, as shown 28 designates a thumb blank cut from one piece of material and both sides of which 8 are alike. Saidthumb blank 28 has a centrallg-disposed opening 30 extending in? war ly from its margin 32 and corresponding to the thumb o ening 16 in the bod blank 2. The thumb blank 28 is provid i with a reinforcement 29, secured in place by stitching 31. The thumbbla 28. is p aced over the reinforcement 26 d secured to the body blank 2 b a row of stitching 34. The thumb blank 28 is then folded upon itself along the center line 36 The body blank 2 is then folded upon itself alon a central line 38 and its margins W are stitc edtogether as indicated at 40, Fig. 7. The free margin of the gusset 2A is then stitched to the adjacent margins of the finger sections 10 and 12 and the gusset 26=is stitched to the adiacent-margins of Am the finger sections 12 and 1A. The ends of the finger sections A andlO are then con.- nected by stitching '16, and the ends of the finger sections, 6- and 12 are connected by stitching 48. The margins 18 and 32 of the body blank .2. and the thumb blank respectively, are .then stitched to the usual wrist band 50. The completed mitten is then turned inside out and is ready to be worn on either the right or left hand, as o bothsides 3and Bare enactl l since half of its opening 30 is in the side 3 and the other half in the side 5 the mitten will be equally as comfortable on either hand.
By reference to Fig. 7 it will be noted that the reinforcements and 29 are so understood that I have provided a three finger mitten embodying the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown the preferred form of such mitten I reserve the right to make such changes in the form,
proportion and minor details that properlyfall within the scope of the invention as set forth and claimed.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a three finger mitten a body blank cut to form duplicate sides and finger sections, the last section being of sufficient capacity to'receive the third and fourth fingers, said blank being adapted to be folded upon itself along a central line and stitched together at its margins and rovided along its folded portion with a t umb opening which extends equally into both sides of said body blank, a se arate reinforcement sewed to the body b ank and having an opening registering with the thumb opening 'in said-blank, gussets sewed to the adjacent margins of the corresponding finger sections, a thumb blank having duplicate sides with an opening corres onding to the thumb opening in the b0 y blank, said thumb blank being stitched to the body blank around the margins of the thumb openings and folded upon itself along a central line and stitched together at its margins, and a separate reinforcement stitched to the thumb blank and having an opening registering with the opening in said thumb blank,- substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN T. BASKIN. Witnesses:
L. J. Freeman, 'F. C. FISCHER.
