PLASTIC COMPOSITION.
Ito Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAKoB SULsER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, and resident of Basel, Switzerland, have invented a new 1 and useful Plastic Composition, of which w together the linoleum cement with cork meal or wood meal, and lincrusta coverings are similarly made of linoxyn (oxidized linolein) with wood meal; in other materials used for floor or wall coverings dther binding mate m rials are employed,'such as cement or the like with mineral fillings to which a greater or less proportion of wood meal is added according to the'use for which the material is intended. Such materials do not well withstand prolonged exposure to dampness; for
the reason that cork and wood easily absorb moisture and are then liable to rot.
It has now been discovered that these additions of wood, turf, cork and so forth may 0 with advantage be wholly or partially replaced by cuprene, and linoleums produced with cuprene" are resistant to moisture and other chemical attacks, for cuprene withstands most chemical agents and also is not affected by water. By cuprene I designate the products of polymerization of acetylene resulting from the condensation of acetylene in the presence of copper or through dark electric discharges. These condensation products are well known (see Berliner Berichte 32, 2381, and ,55, 267, Comptes Ren- Application filed October 31, 1922. Serial 1%. 598,201.
dus, Vol. 130, page 250, and Vol. 122, page 1240, etc.). They constitute a corklike mass which is substantially unalterable and incapable of being wet. The production of linoleum or of the lincrusta material is notdifferent from the usual methodexcept that instead of kneading the linoleum cement with cork meal or wood meal, it is kneaded with finely ground cuprene or with cuprene produced in an exceedingly fine grained form; and the massthus formed is then pressed upon paper or jute in known manner.
It is important to state that the cuprene serves only as an addition or so-called filling for externally uniform plastic materials produced by intimately kneading the euprene with a binding material such for instance. as linoleum, lincrusta and so forth; further, that the plastic materials produced from cuprene have the above mentioned advantages as compared with those made from wood or cork.
What I claim is:
1. A plastic composition composed of an intimate mixture of a linoleum cement with 'cuprene as filling material, substantially, as
substantially as and for the purpose dey scribed.
In witness whereoflhave hereunto signed my name this 16th day of October, 1922, in the presence. of two subscribing witnesses.
JAKOB SULSER.
