Description

l. W. GRAHAM.'
implements forConstructing Rail Fences.
Patented May 19,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
JOHN W. GRAHAM, or PRAIRIE DEPOT, oHIo.
IMPROVEMENT IN IMPLEMENTS FOR CONSTRUCTING RAIL FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 151,l 16, dated May 19, 1874; application filed April 1o, 1874. e
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. GRAHAM, of Prairie Depot, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Iinproved Fence-Rail Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis a perspective View; and Fig. 2 a vertical cross-section, of post.
The invention relates to means whereby the rails or longitudinal boards, which are usually affixed bynails or other fastenin gs to the fenceposts, may be spaced atexactly the intervals desired and in a corresponding manner on all the panels. The invention consists in a railgage constructed, put together, and operated substantially as hereinafter described, and subsequently indicated in the claim.
A represents the ordinary posts of a plank or board fence, placed at such distance apart as is preferred, and B the rails, which may be all of the same length, or some long and others short. C is my improved rail-gage, consisting of the longslotted piece c, rigid headpiece c1, pivoted catch c2, sliding blocks c3, and clamp-screws c4.
The application is as follows: The posts A having been planted or iirlnly secured at the bottom, the top rail carefully fastened inposition, and the blocks c3 placed precisely at the relative distances apart, which correspond to the intended intervals between the rails, the gage' C is hung by the rigid block c1 on the top rail, and the catch turned down. to prevent its escape. The rails are then caused successively to rest upon the blocks c3, while the ends of each are nailed upon the two posts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A railgage, consisting of slotted piece c, head piece c', pivoted catch c2, adjustable blocks c3, and clamp-screws o4, as set forth.
JOHN W. GRAHAM.
