IRA B. HORNER, OF WESTON, OHIO.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,292, dated December 20,1887. Application filed December 30, 1885. Serial No. 187,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA B. HORNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, Wood county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straight Rail Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fences wherein a single rod or wire is employed for supporting the rails and bracing the posts together, and to a transverse foot-rest which is designed to be embedded in the ground, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a loop which is employed for connecting the upper ends of the posts to each other and for supporting the upper rails, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing such a loop ready for application to the fence. 7
A A represent the vertical posts, which are provided at a suitable distance above their lower ends with perforations a a, through which passes a rod or wire, B, the ends of which are secured to the sill O. ;.The center said top rails are held in position by loops E E, which partially encircle the posts and rails, so as to maintain the rails in position and prevent the posts spreading apart.
In a fence constructed as hereinbefore described it is proposed that the ends of the lower rails shall be placed one above the other, I
weight of the rails will keep the wire B taut at all times.
By my construction a fence can be made which is strong, durable, and simple.
I claim- 1. The combination, with the parallel upright posts, of the fence-rails located between the same, a loop for binding the upper ends of the posts to each other and supporting the top rails, and brace-wires passing under the lower rail, then upward through the posts, the ends being secured to the transverse sill, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth. 4
2. In a fence, the combination of the vertical posts A A, suitably attached to each other at their upper ends, the lower ends thereof being attached to a sill, and a wire, B, having a loop between the posts within which the lower rails rest, said wire passing through perforations at in the posts, the ends being attached to the sill-piece, substantially as shown.
IRA B. HOBNER.
