UNITED PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM EURDIOK AND WALTER H. EURDIOK, OE MONROE, wisooNsrN.
IMPROVEMENT EN STVE-PIPE SHELVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15 1,0841, dated May 19, 1874 application filed April 8, 1874.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HIRAM BURDICK and WALTER H. BURDICK, of Monroe, in the county of Green and State of Visconsin, have invented vcertain new and useful Improvements in Stove Pipe Shelves, and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a stove-pipe shelf and fastening, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled inthe art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a centra-l vertical section on linea Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the sectional collar. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view, showing projections H. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section through the line y y, Fig. 1.
D represents the stove-pipe, around which is placed` a collar, made in two sections, `C C. lhese sections are at each end provided with a tapering or beveled projection, A, which fit close together, as shown, and over each pair of projections or arms, A A, is placed a tapering sleeve or collar, B. By this means the collar is quickly and easily secured permanently at any point desired upon the stovepipe. In the center of each section C of the collar is cast a box or mortise, a, with a horizontal arm, G, on the outside thereof, which arm runs parallel with the division of the collar. Opposite the mortise a there is a corresponding notch, al, in the bar G, and at each end of said bar is a shoulder or oset, a2. The shelf is made of metal, square or other suitable form, perforated, and made in .two sec tions, J and J. Upon the inner edge of the section or leaf J are two projecting arms, E E, which pass over cross-bars b, and through holes b under the inner edge of the other leaf J thereby locking the two leaves on a level, and also become as strong as though they were cast in one piece. The center of the shelf is cut out, as shown, and on opposite sides therein are two inward-projecting arms, F F, which are intended to fit in the inortises a a on the collar to hold the leaves in a perpendicular position when not in use. At each end of each collar-section C, on the inner sidel of the arm A, is a projection, d, and a notch, (Z, in the top of the collar, and on each shelt'A leaf are projections H to fit under the projec tions d and in the notches d, wherebyr the leaves are prevented from tipping either endwise or sidewise, and from comin g oft` when in use. The shelf-sections rest upon the shoulders a2 of the arms G.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,.is-
1. The shelves J J', constructed with the supporting projections H, in combination with a 'separate or detachable collar, made in seotions, and secured by means of thimbles B B,
all arranged as set forth.
2. A stove-pipe shelf made in two sections, having projections H H, in combination with collars C C, having arms Gr G and notches d d',
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention, we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM BURDICK. XV. H. BURDICK.
Witnesses A. S. DOUGLAS, E. T. GARDNER.
