ADJUSTABLE SCAFFOLD-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,723, dated June 9, 1885.

Application filed February 20, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES Lnwrs HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of 5 Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Scaffold- Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others IO skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable adj ustablescaffoldsupport; and it consists in the parts and combiuations of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

The ledger is inserted between the walls I) b of the saddles and rests on the bottom thereof, being secured against endwise and upward movement and displacement by the pins a a, which pass through perforations in the saddles near their bottom edges and through theledger. The sad dles are made of malleable iron for the sake of greater strength. In each of the saddles B B, I make two sockets, C C, one on each side, and

3 5 at an angle of about fifteen vor twenty degrees from the perpendicular, and gradually inclining from the walls of the saddles outward, so as (ModeL) to leave a slightly-inclined opening for the leg to enter. These openings extend through and permit the sides of the legs to bear against the ledger, and thus hold it against any tendency it may have to wabble, owing to scantness in material,while the tops or upper ends of the legs rest against the offsets or shoulders d of the sockets. The legs D may be of any desired thickness or length, and are easily removed and replaced. The sockets C C may be of any size desired to accommodate ledgers and legs of different thickness.

To adjust the scaffolding to uneven surfaces, legs of different lengths may be used in the same socket.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In a trestle, the combination of the ledger, the adjustable saddle having the rearwardly and outwardly projecting sockets, the pins for securing the same, and the removable legs, substantially as described.

2. In a four-legged trestle, the combination of the ledger, the saddles, the inclined sockets, the pins, and the legs, substantially as described.

3. An adjustable support fortrestle-ledg ers, consisting of the perforated malleableiron saddle having the inclined and rearwardly-extending sockets, forming inclined openings, and having the offsets or shoulders 01, substantially as set forth.
