Description

C. FUNTA-NA, Carving-Tools.
9atented May 19, 1874.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIoEo CESAR FONTANA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARVING-TOOLS.
Specific ation forming part of Letters Patent N0`.150,94S, dafed May 19, 1874; application iiled October 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OEsAR FONTANA, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Carving-Tools, of which the following is a specilication:
This invention relates to that class of imple- `ments employed in carving wood, and especially where the groundworkis cut away so as to raise objects or igures in relief ,and it consists of two or more chisels placed on the body of the tool so as to abut against a projecting shoulder, and held in position by set-screws; one of the chisels being a sharp knifeedge, for cutting the wood; another being a serrated chisel, for indenting the wood; and a third a square-edged chisel or stop, placed between the knife-edge and serrated chisels, but a littIe back of their cutting-edges, for the purpose of regulating the depth of cut of the instrument, by means of which the rusticated or groundwork of the ligure in relief is out to an even depth, and the gure itself sharply defined, thereby enabling a boy to perform the work, and produce better work than where several tools are used separatelyr for such purpose, as I will further explain by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of my invention; Fig. 2,'a sectional View; and Fig. 3, an end view. Fig. 4 represents a portion ot' a pictureframe and the work thereon performed by my improved carving-tool.
A is the picture-frame; B, the figure in re lief; (which is sketched by the workman previous to cutting;) and C is the rusticated groundwork, out by the tool D, said tool being composed ofthe knife-edged cutting-chisel E, for cutting the surface of the wood 5 the serrated chisel F, for breaking up and removing the Wood cut by the chisel E; the square-ended stop G, for regulating the depth of cut; and the set-screws h h.
What I claim is p The combination ofthe knife-edged chisel E, serrated chisel F, adjustable stop G, and setscrews h h of the carving-tool D, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 21st day of November, 1871.
CESAR FONTANA. Witnesses: ARTHUR NEILL, S. EMIL HEUsNER.
