Description
G. ASHBY. ADevices for Marking Dovetails-.
No.45,477, Patented Dec.16,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' GEORGE ASHBY, OF DEOATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR MARKING DOVETAILS.
Specticaton forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,477, dated Dwemher 16, 1873; application filed A November 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE AsHEY, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Device for Marking Dovetails, otl Which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to rapidly mark the dovetail mortises and tenons on the respective boards 5 and consists of a square suitably marked. A second blade of the square supports V-shaped pieces of metal, adjustable on said blade, and provided With cutters, so that a tap of a hammer will leave marks on the board. Suitable gages are placed upon the device, as is hereinafter more fully described.
Figure lis a plan of a square embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the marker; and Fig. 3, a side view ofthe gage E.
A is the stock or handle of the square; B, the blade, suitably marked; O, a second blade to the square, upon which slide the markers D D D Dl D. These markers are secured to the blade with set-screws c c. The gage E, changeable and adjustable on the blades O and B, regulates the depth of the tenons and mortises. The gage F, on the handle, regulates the distance of the marker Dl from the end of the board, and serves as a guide. The markers D D are for the tenons and mortiscs at the ends of the board, and only have the cutter d on the inner side. The markers D D have cutters cl d on each side. A brace, G, at the ends of the blades, is to steady the same.
The marker is operated as follows, viz: The
markers D Dl are placed at the distance apart desired, the gage F placed to bring the marker D- (near the handle) at the distance inside of the board desired. The markers D D D are then readily adjusted at the spaces on the rule onthe blade B. The gages E E are set to regulate the depth of the mortises or tenons. Adjustin g the square upon the board and placing a piece of hard Wood over the markers, (to prevent the upper edges from being broken, the markers having cutting-edges on both bottom and top,) a tap of the hammer on the piece of Wood forces the cutters into the board, and marking the same ready for the saw.
The markers and gages can be placed upon the blade B, as it may be necessary in some kinds of Work so to do.
Vith this device, when the gages and markers are suitably placed, any number of boards can be marked at a great saving of time over the old method of laying them oft' With a rule.
The cutters d d may be made separately from the body of the marker, and secured thereto, for removal for sharpening.
I claim as my inventionl. The markers D D Dl D', in combination with the blades O or B, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. rlhe combination ot' the handle A, blades B C, markers D D D D', and gages E F, as and for the purpose set forth.
GEORGE ASHBI. vitnesses:
CHARLES P. HonsTTNT THEO. COLEMAN.
