IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. W. ERWIN, of Manchester, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vash-Boilers; and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,

which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of washboilers, or wash-boiler attachments, in which the Steam is forced up through a tube with the hot suds, and from the upper end ot' the tube onto the clothes; and the nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an attachment for wash-boilers having a single central tube, and also in providing said attachment or other similar attachments with a valve at the lower end to shut off the steam whendesired, as will be hereinafter more fully Set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a wash-boiler with my attachment and valve. Fig. 2 isa bottom view of mywash-boiler attachment with valve.

A represents an ordinary wash-boiler, constructed in any of the known and usual ways. B represents a false bottom to lit within the boiler A, and is provided with a downwardprojecting flange, C, around its circumference, which flange is perforated, as shown, and rests upon the bottoln of the boiler. In the center ofthe bottom B is a vertical tube, D, extend ing upward for a suitable height, closed at its upper end, and provided with perforations w around its upper end. In suitable projections on the side of the vertical tube D is placed a rod, c, which passes down through the false bottom B, and has a valve, b, attached to its lower end for closing the lower end of the tube D.

By closing the valve b, the steam will pass up along the sides of the boiler and raise the clothes up loose, so that when opened and the steam and suds are allowed to pass up the tube and through the perforations x w onto the clothes, the dirt will be removed better and quicker, and settles the clothes down again,

thereby keeping them from getting dry against the side of the vessel and burning, as is often the case.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a washboiler or wash-boiler attachment having one or more vertical tubes for the upward passage of the steam, of a valve for closing the lower end of -said tube or tubes, for the purposes herein set forth.

2'. The combination of the false bottom B, with perforated flange C, the central tube D, with perforations the rod a., and valve b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set'forth.
