Description

N. c. WARNER.
Wash Bnilr Attachments] Patented March 11, 1873.
"UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTGEI.
NELSON O. WARNER, OF HOPEWELL FURNACE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILER ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,686, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N LsoN (J. WARNER, of Hopewell Furnace, in the county of Washington and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam or Fountain Washer, of which the following is a specification t Figure 1 is a detail vertical longitudinal central section of my improved washer taken through the line 00 00, Fig. 2, and shown as applied to an ordinary wash-boiler. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I Y
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved attachment for ordinary wash-boilers, or other boilers, by means of which the clothes may be washed quickly, thoroughly, and without being injured by the circulation through them of hot water. The invention consists in the base or bottom plate, concave upon its lower side, convex upon its upper side, and having holes formed in it, the slightl y-faperin g central pipe having notches formed in its upper end, and covered with acap-plate, the guards, and the valves, constructed and operating in connection with each other as hereinafter fully described.
A is a plate, of tin or other suitable metal, made concave upon its lower side and convex upon its upper side, and which may be of any desired form and size, according to the shape and size of the boiler in which it is to be used. In the center or highest part of the plate A is formed a hole four and a half inches, more or less, in diameter, in which is secured thelower end of apipe, B. The pipe B should project so that its top may be about upon a level with the rim of the boiler, and tapers slightly,
so that the diameter of its upper end may be three inches, more or less, or about two-thirds the diameter of its lower end. To the upper end of the pipe B is secured a cap-plate, (J, the upper edges of said pipe having a number of notches, 11, formed in it, only enough of the pipe being left to securely hold the said cap-plate (J. In the plate A are formed six, more or less, holes, a, which are covered upon the upper side of the plate A by guards D, to prevent the clothes from being forced into said holes and impeding the operation of the washer. The guards D are open at their sides to allow the water to pass freely beneath them and through the holes a; The holes a are covered upon the lower side of the plate A by valves E, opening downward, so that they may be closed by the upward pressure of the water and steam in the space beneath the plate A, and may be opened by the downward pressure of the water in' the space above the said plate A, to allow the said water to flow back into the space beneath said plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent- The plate A, concave upon its lowerside, convex upon its upper side, and having holes a formed in it, the slightly-tapering central pipe B, having notches b formed in its upper end. and covered with a cap plate, 0, the guards D, and the valves E, constructed and operating in connection with each other substantially as herein shown and described.
NELSON O. WARNER.
