Application filed May 20, 1922. 7 Serial No. 562,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E, PiLE, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Parsons, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to filing devices and has for its object the rovision of a novel file. designed for use y lawyers in keeping together all the papers pertaining to a given case, various separate envelope compartments being provided for holding the pleadings, correspondence, case papers, notes andothe data andthe file furthermore having a certain space upon which it is designed that the authorities cited in the given case be noted.
An important object is the rovision of a file of this character in whic the various small envelopes for holding the difierent types of papers are aflixed to the main contamer, the main container itself being so constructed as to be folded and to inclose all the envelopes so that a compact and neat file will result.
An additional object is the provision of a file of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, eflicient, time saving and accurate in use and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the file in closed position,
Figure 2 is a view of the inside showing Figure 3 is a erslgetive view showing the inside of the it w on partly opened,
Figure d is a fragmentary elevation of the file Fi 21 5,15 and 7 are elevations of the enveo es or containers used in con unction with the invention; and
Figure 8 is a fragmentary elevation of the device showing the series of envelopes or containers arra ed with their flaps extending horizontay or at right angles to the flaps of the or J; x1" shown in Figure 2,
draw- Referring more pamicularly tethe 31 have shown the file @ompr jacket 10 which is formed of cardboard of suitable size and thickness and which is folded along its center line 11 so as to enclose the papers which are stored within the auxiliary compartments or envelopes to be described. One edge of the folded jacket is formed with a tab 12 upon which may be inscribed a number referring to the case or the names of the plaintiff and defendant so that proper identification of the file is easy. I
The front of the outside of the jocket bears the name of the file and is provided with 1e ends as to the court, county and State with blank lines opposite these legends upon which the data may be filled in. Also inscribed on the file are legends relating to the filing of the various pleadings together with data lines referring to pleadings and other lines referring to the orders, these lines being of course written upon inaccordance with the data in the given case. There are also provided other lines for the replies, date of trial, the verdict and date of the verdict, a line for the motion for new trial, etc. These various legends might be arranged in any preferred order and might vary more or less without departing from the s irit of the invention.-
upon one inside face of the Inscribe jacket is the le end Authorities below which are ruled ines 13 upon which may be quoted the various authorities or cases cited as references in the given case to which the file applies. Secured upon the lower end of this same side of the jacket is an envelope 14 of ordinary t pe desi ed for the reception of memoran um car s etc., this legend being provided upon the flap 15 of the envelope.
Disposed against the other inside-face 16 of the jacket is a series of superposed envelopes 17 18and 19 which may be secured to t e jacket in any desired manner as for instance by means of the paper fasteners 20 illustrated. These envelopes are of progressively decreasing size so that. the ends of the lower ones will project beyond the ends of the envelopes above to be visible when the jacket is open. ese pro'ecting ends of the envelopes 17 l8 and 19 ear respectively the legends Pleadings, Correspondence and Case papers and data notes etc. These envelopes might be anyone of a large nher of tee though it is preferable that h e their p gt; 2% and 23 respectively secured by means of cords 24 which are secured to buttons 25 on the flaps and wrapped about other buttons 26 on the envelopes. The various envelopes are preferably labeled Pocket 1, Pocket 2 and Pocket 3.
The face 16 of the file is inscribed at its top with the legend Miscellaneous, briefs, etc. and it is intended that briefs and other papers not classified be placed against this face of the jacket beneath the superposed small envelopes.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive file which will be highly advantageous for use by lawyers in keeping the records and all papers in their cases, the file being of such construction that the various papers of different types may be kept separate and in their proper respective places so that they will be readily accessible at a moments notice without hunting through a heterogonous conglomeration, so that a wonderful saving in tim and labor will be effected.
While l[ have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to be understood that l reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A file including a sheet of stiff material creased longitudinally to form complementary sections, a plurality of superimposed envelopes each of which being slightly smaller than the other so that their upper ends project one above the other, and a common fastening passing through the envelopes to one of the sections.
2. A filing device including a sheet of stifi material creased longitudinally to form a pair of complementary sections, a plurality of superimposed envelopes arranged upon one of the sections with their flaps extending longitudinally of the latter and having their upper ends arranged in stepped relation, and fastenings extending through the inner longitudinal edges of the envelope and one of the sections.
In testimony whereof ll alfix my signature.
emanates E. Pita.
