GERALD GAMIPBELL, OF PARKS, TEXAS.
BRAKE.
Application filed February 17, 1923.
To all 107mm it may concern.
Be it known that I, GERALD K. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parks, in the county of Stephens and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to automatic means for applying the brakes of a railroad car if the same should leave the rails. thus acting to stop the car as soon as it leaves the rails so as to prevent serious damage.
Another object of the invention is to connect the device with the train line and to provide means for preventing the escape of air after the car has been put back upon the track.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, il lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which z- Figure l is a plan view of the lower part of a car showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a side view thereof.
Figure 3 is an end view.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the car off the track.
Figures 5 and 6 are detail views.
In these views 1 indicates the trucks of a car, 2 the wheels thereof which engage the rails 3 and 4 indicates the train or brake .line. As is well understood when this line is drained the brake shoes will be applied to the wheels. In carrying out my invention I connect branch lines 5 with the train line, one branch line being located adjacent the Serial in. 619,747.
front wheels of the front truck and the other line adjacent a rear wheel of the rear truck. Each line leads to a T-coupling 6 which carries a pairof threaded pipes 7. the outer ends of which are closed. I These pipes are so arranged that if the wheels should jump off the rails one of the pipes would strike the rail and thus be broken off soas to permit the air to flow from the train line and thus allow the brakes to be applied to stop the train. Each branch line contains a cock 8 so that the branch line can be closed after the car has been placed back upon the rails and it is desired to release the brakes. Each branch line also includes a flexible part 9 which allowsplay of the rest of the line.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the brakes will be automatically applied as soon as a car jumps the track so that serious damage is prevented as the train will be brought to a stop as soon as the wheels leave the rails.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
- I. desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In combination with a railroad car, a branch line connected with the brake line thereof a flexible part in the branch line, a T-coupling connected with the vertical end of the branch line and pipes threaded in the coupling and having their outer ends closed said pipes being adapted to strike a rail and be broken off if the wheels should leave the rail.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
GERALD K. CAMPBELL.
