To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnur W. Boone, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Greenwood, in the county of Greenwood railway-car trucks, and more particularly to means for cutting olf air in the air-brake pipe and braking cars in the event of derailment.
The invention consists in the several features and combination of features as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is the provision of means to cut off air in the air-brake pipe and brake the cars automatically in the event of derailment.
A further object of. the invention is the provision of means to sustain the cars after derailment and also to prevent them from entirely leaving the track.
A still further object is the provision of a device of the character described which is simple, inexpensive, and durable in construction and easy and effective to operate.
Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is a side view of my device; Fig. 2, an end view; Fig. 3, a front view of the cutting-plate; Fig. 4 a sectional view of one of the hangers; Fig. 5, a detail sectional view of one of the cut-off plates; and-Fig. 6, a detail side view of one of the hangers.
In the drawings, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 represents a car-truck, provided with a truck-frame 2 and wheels 3, and t the air-brake pipe, which is attached to the said car-truck 1 in any desired manner. Rods 5 are secured transversely to the underside of the car-truck 1, and rollers 6, which are preferably longer than the width of the railroad track. and are provided with flanges 6 are suspended from said rods 5 by means of hangers 7, said hangers being provided at their lower ends with'circular rings 8, which loosely engage grooves 8" in said rollers, and at their upper ends with elongated loops 9, which loosely embrace and slide upon the rods 5, providing means for the rollers 6 to move up and down.
10 represent plates for cutting the airbrake pipe 4-, and release the air therein, each ofsaid plates 10 being provided with a circular lower portion 11, loosely embracing the rollers 6, allowing it to turn therein, and being also provided with an elongated slot at its upper end, with which a pin 13, projecting from the rods 5, loosely engages.
In use, when a car is derailed, the weight of the car will be thrown onto the rollers 6, and if they are long enough they will rest on the top of the rails and roll along thereon and automatically prevent the car from entirely leaving the track. At the same time the rollers and the hangers will be pushed upward, which will cause the cut-off plates 10 to move upwardly and press the airbrake pipe against the bottom of the truck to such an extent that it will out said airbrake, it being preferably of rubber or other flexible material, and the air from the airbrakes will be released automatically at the point where the cut is made and brake the cars.
I do not desire to be limited to the precise details of construction as herein shown and described, as the same may be modified without departing from the spirit of my ini 'ention and the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is 1. In a device. of the character set forth, rollers, an air-brake pipe, slidable plates designed to out said pipe, and means for operatively connecting the rollers and slidable plates, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character set forth, an air-pipe, rods, rollers, means for suspending said rollers from said rods, slida-ble plates connected to said rollers and designed to cut the air-brake pipe and release the air, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the character set forth, an air-brake pipe, rods,'rollers suspended from said rods by means of slidable hangers, slidable plates connected to and operated by said rollers designed to release the air in the air-brake pipe, substantially as shown and described. 7
4. In a device of the character set forth, an air-brake pipe, rods, rollers sus ended from said rods by means of verticalfy slidable hangers, and vertically slidable plates with cutting edges designed to cut the airbrake pipes and release the air therefrom, substantially as shown and described.
