PATENT OFFICE.
UNITED STATES WILSON A. REAVES AND GUSTAVE 1?. NICOLOPOOLOS, OE SHEFFIELD, ALABAMA.
BRAKE-APPLYING DEVICE.
Application filed March 24, 1926.
The object of this invention is to provide means for applying the emergency brakes of a train if some of the wheels thereof should leave the rails so as to quickly bring the train to a stop and thereby prevent accidents.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing our invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a railway car showing the invention in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view of a part of the appliance.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figures 4t and 5 are views showing a modification.
In Figure 1, we place a drain cock 1 in the air line A. of each car of the train and attached to the handle of this cock is a cable 2. This cable is attached to an arm 3 on a rock shaft l. which is carried by a bracket 3 depending from the car body. A second arm 6 on the rock shaft has fastened thereto a cable 7 which is attached to a journal box 8 on the truck of the car. lVe prefer to attach the cables to the arms by means of U-bolts 9, the arms being grooved, as at 10, to receive portions of the cables.
Instead of using cables, we may use rods, such as shown at 11 in Figures 4 and 5, these rods being connected to the arms 5 of the rock shafts l which also carry the arms 6 which are connected with portions of the truck by the cables 7. These figures also show each arm 6 as formed with the pin carrying projection 12, the pin 13 of which will engage the arm 5 when the arm 6' is pulled downwardly by the cable 7, due to the wheels leaving the tracks.
Serial No. 97,081.
As will be seen from Figure 1, the journal of each wheel may be connected with the device. If one or more wheels should jump the track, the wheel, as it leaves the track, will move its journals downwardly so that the cable 7 would be pulled upon, so that the rock shaft to which the cable is attached would be rocked, and this movement will be communicated to the cable 2 or the rods 11 through the connections shown and this movement of the cable 2 or rods 11 would be communicated to the handle of the cock so that the cock will be opened and the air line drained to apply the brakes. Thus the train would come to a stop shortly after the wheel left the rail and thus wrecking of the train would be prevented.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understood that we may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat we claim is Incombination with a railroad car and its air line, a cock for draining the line, brackets depending from the body of the car, a rock shaft supported at the lower end of each bracket, a pair of divergently arranged arms on each rook shaft, laterally disposed head portions on each arm formed with longitudinal grooves, a flexible element disposed within the groove of one arm, a U- bolt locking said flexible element in position and having connect-ion with the handle of the cock, and flexible means attached to the head of the other arm and having connection with a part of the journal of an axle of the tire so that when the wheels leave the track the cock will be open to apply the brakes.
In testimony whereof we af'iix our signa tures.
lVILSON A. REAVES. GUSTAVE P. NICOLOPOOLQS.
