Assamese- Getawa 0F ar t a reaezseevma aser Applieatirm filed September. 21,. 19221.. Serial ldfo. 589,558. 7
Fa alt itim'ay. concern-.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER GALm-;
WAY, a citizen otthe United States, resist-- ing at Kansas. City, the county of Jackson and State; of Missouri, have invented. certain new and useful. Improvements inv Do.or--
seamin Means; and. Tide declare. following; to be a full, clean-andiexact descrip= tion "of the invention, such'as. will enableothers skilled in the art to whichit: apper tai-ns to makeand. use the same, reference: being had to the accompanying drawings. and to. 'the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. 4 l i This invention relates to car door: sealing means and particularly to a cleat and sealingmeans for. the. slidingside doors of. bot: cars. l
The primary objectis to provide. an efli cient, easily operated sealing means which can be conveniently attached,.making a substantial means of keeping the door closed to prevent access to the car without breaking the seal.
The" novel construction of the invention will be specifically described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the sealing means applied.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sealing means released.
Fig. 3 is a top edge view of the hasp link and its staple.
Fig. 4 is a detail, perspective view of the hinged end of the cleat.
Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference: I
1 designates a car of appropriate construction to which is hung the usual side door 2. F 'astened to the car preferably to one of the side sills is a bracket and guide comprising a bar 3 having a laterally projecting web 4.- at its upper edge near one end, the respective side edges of the web being provided with depending flanges 5 and 6 which are in spaced relation to receive the turned-over edge or barrel-shaped portion 7 of the cleat 8 between them. The portion 7 constitutes a hinge member through which a bolt 9 may pass, the bolt also passing through the flanges 5 and 6, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
The flange 6 extends below the flange 5 and; innconjunction with the narrowv portionof the bar 3' constitutes the meansby which the guide and bracket can be fastened to the. ear. Suitable fastening devices 10 are used for this purpose. I 1
The flange 5 has an upstanding extension 11. which co-operates -with.' the web} 4 to provide a guide? for the lower edge of the 'doo ir fso thatv the lower edge of-;. the door: 1 will be; held relatively close to thens-izde of the; can, the upper edge of the, door:
being. held iflplace by the usual'hanger'sf v The. cleat, is shown. as consisting of a substantially triangular'wall'8", having a lateralv bottom flange 12 and a. lateral vertical flange: 13, the latter constituting a stopagainst which the end of the door may abutwhen the cleat is in door-holding position. The bottom flange 12 extends beyond the end of the triangular portion and merges into the barrel-shaped. portion 7, which constitutes the hinge member by means ofwhich the'cleatis hung-on the bolt 9.
Carried by the car door is a staple hav- The cleat carries. a lug M which is pro} vidfed with. a link-receiving'groove '15. and;
ing a fiat portion 20 adaptedto be secured 4 to the door bythe fastening device 21 and having an end looped over as at 22 and extending through, the door where its threaded end 23 may be fastened by a nut 24. The looped-over portion 22 of the staple receives a link 25, which consists of two elongated side bars 26 and 27 connected at their respective ends by cross bars 28 and 29. The linkis long enough to swing against the cleat and'have its bar ,26 received in the groove 15.
hen the cleat is 'inthe position shown in Fig. 2, the car door can be swung back and forth in the usual way. When it is desired to fasten the door, the cleat will be swung up into the position shown in Fig. 1.so that its edge will be received in the space formed by the angle comprising the plate'8 and the flange 13, the link will vbe swung over to a position to cause its-bar 26 to lie in the groove 15, then the cam will be swung down against the link to hold it in engagement with the lug, that is, the lug and cam constitute two link-receiving jaws to hold the link in the position shown in The act of swinging the cam to- F ig. 1. the position to hold the link in place will automatically cause the two eyes or loops l6 and 17 to register. Then a sealed ribbon 30 may be passed through the loops or eyes 16 and 17 and the ends thereof fastened by a seal 31. Of course, it is to be understood that any seal may be substituted for the seal shown. It will also be apparent that when the parts are in the po sition shown in Fig. 1 and the two eyes 16 and 17 are connected by any appropriate seal, the door cannot be opened withoutbreaking the seal, the penalty for which is obviously severe.
When it is desired to open the door, an authorized person can break the seal, throw the cam out of link-engaging position, and by swinging the link away from the cleat, the cleat can drop to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the door may be opened.
It will, therefore, be apparent that the fastening means is simple in construction, thatit can be easily applied to any exist-. ing type of car, and that it will efliciently operate when in place.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a box car having a sliding side door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket having an upwardly extending guide portion for the door, a flanged cleat pivoted to the bracket and overlapping the bottom and vertical edge of the door at one corner and a fastening device carried by the door engaging a part of the cleat.
2. In combination with a box car having a sliding side door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket having an upwardly extending guide portion for the door, a flanged cleat pivoted to the bracket and overlapping the bottom and vertical edge of the door at one corner and a fastening device carried by the door engaging a part of the cleat, said fasteningdevice comprising a linkpivoted to the door and movable into and out of parallelism with the cleat.
3. In combination with a side door-box car, of a swinging cleat carried "by the car, the swinging cleat having a bottom door engaging fiange and asidedoor engaging flange, the swinging cleat having an upward swinging movement to engage the bottom of the door and thevertical outer edge and having downwardly swinging movement out of functional position and a fastening device carried by the door and engaging the cleat.
4:. In combination with a box car having a sliding door for closing a side opening therein, of a bracket below the lower edge of the'door, the outerverticaledge of the door being movable beyond the bracket and a right angular swinging cleat pivoted to the bracket and having flanges to engageqthe bottom edge and vertical outer edge of the door and means on the door for engaging the cleat.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
