Speoication of Letters Patent. Patent-,ed May 30, 191.1, Application led October 6, 1909, Serial No. 522,190. Renewed April 1, 1911. Serial No. 618,442,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FAnrNc'roN ALLEN, of the city of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, in the State of California', have'invented a. new or Im roved Door for Box-Cars, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact specification, `reference being had to the annexed drawings.
and to the `figures and reference characters marked thereon.
My invention relates to new and improved construction for flush closing ldoors of railway box cars.
The object of the invention is to provide a means .whereby the door may be suspended on a straight rail byanti-iriction rollers, and still be movedV laterally to and from the 'I body of the car, in order to enable it to be moved past the opening to a oint alongside the car body, or, when close to be moved into the doorlopening and thus effect a closure which is flush wlth the outer surface of thecar body. l 4
Another object is to effect a more positive closure when the door is locked'in position.
The tinst of theseobjects is attained' by making a pair of anti-friction roller'hangers, each offwhich is in two members, one member havin l the roller therein to run on the rail, and t e other member being attached to the door, and in so connecting the two l parts of the hanger that the lower or door part will have a lateral movement, independently of the upper part, and thus pro-y vide for an in and out movement of the 'door itself, U
cleat being shown in dotted lines: Fig. 2 is a is drawn out of its closed position.
horizontal section of a portion of the cnrloolcing down on the top of the door. Fi il is a horizontal section of a portion of t le om* looking down on the top of the door which Fig. -1 1s a vertlcal section of the anti-friction roller hanger showing the position of thc two members of the hanger when the door's n` `in Figs. 4 and. In the hollow of the'rail position, and, Fig. 5 is a vertical'section of 3 the anti-friction rollers 4, by' which the Hush-opening door is suspended, roll when the door is opened, the handle 5 being used for opening and closin the same.
The two hangers or the anti-friction rollers which carry the door,. are each made of two members, an upper and a lower, the upper member 6 having therein the anti- `:friction wheel 4, whichis mounted on a bear;`
ing axle 'or pintle V7. Each member 6 has its lower end bent inwardly forming horizontal art 6', shown more particularly in section 1n Figs. y4 and 5, and in this portion 'are secured two bolts 9 9, the lower threaded ends of which'project below a suflicient distance to pass through the horizontal part 11 of the lower memberlll, andto receive the nut 12 thereon.
The lower member 11`serves as a plate 'for securing the door 1 thereto, and the upper inturnedlhorizontal part 11 has transverse slots 10, through which the bolts 9 9 pass. so
that when the nuts 12 are in position the lower member 1l, carrying the door, has a lateral or in and out motion which does not affect the movement of the upper member within which the anti-friction roller is mounted.
In order to provide an effectual means for sealing the door when in n closed position, and also to afford an ensv muuncr of openin the door, I provide a fiat metallic cleat 1` which is hinfrcd to the cnr body, as at. 15, so that it will rock` und in such a position that when the door is closed und the clout is iu its normal position. it will cover the joint between the door und the jumb. This clout. has an arm 14 integral therewith. at the cnil of which is u slot through which a bracket 18 passes. und u holt 1G serves to hold the arm iuV n secure position. A wire passed through n hole` nt 20. in ,the lower cud of the bolt 16. und u .seul 2l serve to lock the sume us n security against tampering.
