These two sections are rigidlyjoined together by means ofbolts 14: extending'through their abutting upper portions and through theadjacent casingof thedoorj The edge flanges 8 and 13 are spaced apart and in parallel, providingan entrance slot'extending' longitudinally of the bottom of thelhanger housing through which the door carried hanger armextends. f
Preferably, and as is customary, atleast 9 two hangers arejfprovided for both the top and bottom of the door. These hangers, as employed at the top of the door, are in the form of brackets 15 having their bases engaging the outer-face of thecdoor and rigidly fixed thereto by a plurality of bolts 16 extending through the door. At the'upper end of their bases, they iare'provided with 'ofi'sets l7 overlying the top edge oftlie door and further extended to providea hanger arm 18 extending vertically in the central plane of the door through the housing slot. The upper end of the hanger arm 18 extends above the upper edge of the wheel retaining flanges 8 and 13, and carries a suitable axle 19 upon which supporting rollers 20 are journalled. The specific mounting of the axle and rollers is immaterial, and any standard construction may be used. These rollers rest upon the tracks 7 and 12 and are retained therein by the edge flanges 8 and 13 so that in sliding the door, the rollers ride longitudinally in these tracks and support the door from the housing 2. c
The hanger bracket at the lower edge of the door is advantageously made for adjustment vertically of the door so that proper distribution of supporting strain upon the top and bottom hanger housing may be effected. The brackets embodying the bottom hangers are formed with two sections; a base section 21 rigidly and permanently bolted to the door 1 at its lower edge, and ahanger section 22 adj ustably supported from the base plate of the section 21. This is effected by providing these plates with stepped interfitting engaging surfaces extending vertically of the door with means for. effecting vertical adjustment of the hanger section upon the fixed section 21. These stepped Surfaces are conveniently formed by providing the base plate 21 and upper arm 23 of the hanger with laterally extending corrugations 24 providing alternating projections and depressions which interfit one with the other and afford a verysubstantial degree of support for the hanger 22. Adjustment is provided by pairs of vertically alined bolts 25 extending throughthe door and through alined openings in the base plate 21, the upper arm 23 of the hanger being provided with elongated slots 26 registering with these bolts, and of a sufficient length to permit the maximum degree of adjustment which may be necessary in fitting the door. The ends of these bolts projecting through the slots 26 are obviously engaged by washers and nuts to clamp the interfitting base and arm 23 in the desired position of adjustment vertically of the door.
The lower hangers at the lower extremities of their arms 23 are offset outwardly at 27 and thence extend downwardly parallel with the face of the door, their lower ends terminating in inward ofisets 28 having upstanding vertically therefrom, hanger arms 29 ahned wlth and extending through the central longitudinal slot in the bottom of the bottom housing 3. The bottom hanger arms 29, similarly to the upper hanger arms 18, mount axles 30 upon which rollers 31 are journalled. Also as in the case of the upper housing, the arm 29 extends above the edge flanges 8 and 13 with the rollers 31 resting upon the tracks 7 and 12. It will be evident that in mounting the door, proper distribution of support to the upper and lower housings is facilitated by providing for adjustment of the bottom hangers. Preferably, the top and bottom hangers are alined so that the adjustment of the bottom hangers may have the effect also of equalizing the support between the respective pairs of hangers.
Sliding doors, upon the exterior of buildings, freight cars, etc., are often diflicult to open or close in winter weather because of the formation of ice between the edge of the door and the door casing, due to the penetration of rain, sleet and snow between the door edge and easing. In conjunction with the door hanger housings, we have provided door end housings secured to the sides of the door casing and cooperating with the hanger housings to protect the door from the entry of rain, sleet or snow, as described. These housings are in the form of metal plates 32 having edge flanges 33 adapted to rest against and be bolted tothe face'of the door casing or car side,;and extending. vertically of the casing to a pointbeyond the top and bottom edges of the door. Within the boundaries of these edges, the plates 32 are flangedto provide channels 34 to receive and house the edges of the door in open or closed position, the edge flanges 33'being extending beyond the top and bottom edges of the channel or door edge housing 34 and having lateral olfsets 35 extending in the. direction of the adjacent' hanger housings 2 and 3. These housings are of a length to extend over and cover the open tops and bottoms of the channels 34 with the extensions 35 of the door edge housings overlapping andbolted to the ends of the topflanges 9 of the outer section of the hanger housings, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, andas suggested by the separated view of these parts inFigure 4. Since the hanger housings 2 and 3 are closed at their. sides and top over and under lie, respectively, the upper and lower ends of the channels 34, the entry of rain, sleet or snow in these channels is prevented,-so that with door closed or fully opened and the door edge fitted in the housings, it will now be impossible for rain, sleet or snow to enter in their channels to freeze the door shut or open as the case may be.
The hanger housings 2 and 3 and the end housing 32 therefore provide a continuous housing around the edge of the door casing cooperating with and protecting it from the dangers of cold weather freezing and clogging.
1 The sliding door may be attached in its closed position for sealing by means of a bracket 36 which may be fixed to the door casing by bolting or riveting to the channels 34 of an edge housing 32, the bracket bein formed with an outstanding keeper plate 3 'lllO having its edge notched to form a T slot 38 therein. Upon the face of the door is secured a hasp mount comprising a plate 39 bolted or screwed to the face of the door and loosely pivoting thereon at 40, a hasp 41 having an H head 42, the cross bar 43 of which is adapted to enter the T slot of the hasp through the standard or stem slot portion 44 in the vertical edge of the hasp. One leg of the H head and an adjacent portion'of the hasp may be drilled as indicated to receive the Wire or metal ribbon of a seal when the door is that of a freight car. The hasp 42 maybe pivotally mounted upon the plate 39 by means of a pivot hook 45 inserted through an opening in the plate 39 at the pivot point of the hasp and entering into the door-1, the 7 shank 46 of the pivot hook being rigidly held by means of a clamping plate 47 bolted .2 through the underlying plate'39'tothe door V 1 and clamping this shank between-itself and the base plate 39. The hanger and door edge housings described are applicable generally to building structures and to wooden freight cars. In
applying the hanger housing at the top of the 7 door to steel freight cars, the top housing 2 is slightly modified as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings. The inner section 4 having the upper end of its plate portion bent down wardly as at 48 and the upper end of the outer section being correspondingly made horizontal as at 49 so that a horizontal inner edge of flange is presented, which may be bolted to the top edge of the steel car.
