GLASS SCRAPER.

Be it known that JOSEPH S. KNIGHT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in. the county of Erie and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glass Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in glass scrapers or the like implements to be used in cleaning glass or other hard or smooth surfaces where minute particles are apt to cling tenaciously and in defiance of usual methods and implements for cleansing such surfaces.
It is an object of the invention to produce an implement embodyingv a holder and a d etachable and reversible double-edge scraper blade or knife adapted to be moved by the holder across the surface to be treated, the holder being so constructed as to permit of changes in the angular position of the blade with respect to the surface. ,e Other objects of the invention are to provide a readily-operable holder for opening to receive or discharge the blade; to render the construction cheap to manufacture and market; to adapt the holder to the hand and to keep the device within small compass without sacrificing its capacity to perform the work.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claim appended hereto.

Figure 1 is an edge view of an implement constructed according to the present invention.

Figure 3 is a cross section, taken on the line 3 3 in Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 4-4, also in Figure 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 5 and 6 designate a pair of aws of sheet metal or other appropriate material arranged in parallelism and being of suitable length and depth to engage upon opposite sides of a metal blade or knife 7 having the knife edges 8 and 9. The jaws are provided with handles 10 and 11 which are preferably formed in the same sheet with the aws. The handles diverge away from their points of connection with the jaws and the jaws are opened by the squeezing of the handles together. The' handles project loosely through slots 12 and 13 in a metallic barrel 14. The barrel is of spring metal and its opposite edges engage against the outer faces of the jaws 5 and 6 urging said jaws together upon the blade 7. Now the blade is perforated, two such perforations being shown through the intermediate portion thereof eqfuidistantly spaced from the ends.l
The perforations are indicated: at 15 in Figure 4 and in register withthese perforations are similar perforations 164 in thev jaw 6'. Projections 17 are carried by the companion jaw 5 in such position as to enter the aligning perforations 15 and 16 and to anchor the blades 7 securely in place` between the jaws and to further reinforce the jaws and to. bind them together against relatively sliding movement in parallel planes.
The projections 17 may be made, as illustrated, by displacing the metal out of the plane of the jaw 5 thus creating depression upon the outside face of the jaw 5 into which are engaged tongues. 18 .extending from the edge of the barrel 14. The opposite edge of the barrel is provided with notches 19 at and about the perforations 16 in the other jaw 6; this for the reason that the projections 17preferably extend through and beyond the jaw 6. The outer ends of the projections engage the walls of the notches 19 and further prevent any longitudinal casual shifting of the jaws with respect to the barrel.
1n Figures 1 and 3 it will be apparent that the inner edge portions of the jaws are made to diverge sharply away from the sides of the blade 7 and the portions of the handles which join therewith are slightly offset. This enables me to preserve the parallelism of the jaws and the intimate contact of the jaws and blade throughout an extensive area. The blade` is thus steadied and tightly and securely clamped and the use of the perforations and the projections serves to center the blade so that its cutting edge will always assume a correct position for coping with the work.
In the use of the device, the thumb may be placed at one side of the barrel let and two or more fingers at the opposite side thereof and the implement made to assume substantially the position indicated in Figure 1, in which it is moved across the surface of the glass or other material to be scraped. Ot course the angular position of the blade may be varied as conditions require or the obstinacy of the adhering particlesdemands. Only a slight pressure need be exerted and if the blade edge is kept sharp and uniform along its length, the blade will move into contact with all parts of the surface and will dislodge the minutest of the particles.
As one edge of the blade becomes dull, said blade may be reversed and the work proceeded with or a substitute blade may be made to lill the position of the blade which .has become dull upon both edges. lt is a simple mattei' to torce the two handles l0 vand 1l together between the fingers and vby so doing the spring barrel 14 is pried open and the jaws 5 and 6 are swung apart. The projections 17 are withdrawn from the perorations of the jaw 6 and blade 7 and the blade may be shaken, or will automatically fall, from the holder. It is a simple matter to insert a fresh blade, care only being re- ,cally described vembodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being,` restricted only by the scope ot' the following claim.

A scraper comprising a spring barrel split lengthwise at one, side and havingI spaced apart longitudinal openings in its opposite side, a pair of jawy members hav ing outer end portions adapted to lit between the edges o't said spring barrel and normally urgedtogether thereby into parallelism, one of said end portions having a recess therein intersecting the split and the other one of said end portions having a depression therein to provide a projection at one side adapted to enter saidv recess ot the tirst en d portion and a cavity at its other side, said barrel having a locking lug at one edge ot' the split adapted to enter said cavity and lock the jaw members to the barrel, said jaw members having diverging handles on their inner ends extending through said longitudinal openings in the barrel and being C otl'set outwardly rom each other within said barrel to maintain said outer end portions substantially in parallelism at all adjustments, and a blade removably iitting between said outer end portions ot the jaw 1 members and having a recess therein for receiving said projection to lock the blade between the jaws. f
