Description
Aug, 23, 1949. F. o. REBEAUU RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Filed March 29', 1946 Hal Patented Aug. 23, 1949 RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Felix Octave Rebeaud, London, England Application March 29, 1946, Serial No. 658,252 In Great Britain May 16, 1945 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to a device for sharpening safety razor blades either of the single or double edge type.
An object of the invention is to provide a device which will enable a safety razor blade to be sharpened on the ordinary leather strop or other substantially flat sharpening surface. A further object of the invention is to provide in such a device means whereby the blade is automatically presented at the correct angle to the stropping surface during the sharpening operation.
The invention comprises a handle preferably of tubular form having at one end spring means for gripping a safety razor blade so that its cutting edge is exposed and may be presented to the strop or other sharpening surface.
In a preferred construction the handle is of substantially tubular cross-section and the spring means for gripping the blade is of the bulldog grip type. The bulldog is secured as an extension or continuation of the tubular handle so that the blade gripped in the jaws of the bulldog projects substantially radially from the handle. Similarly, the handles or levers of the bulldog also project in a radial direction. By determining the angle of the levers and the length of the levers the angle at which the blade is presented to the strop may be determined since the end of the levers bear upon the strop to prevent the angle from becoming too acute.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows a razor blade holder in accordance with the present invention in side elevation,
Figure 2 shows the holder in plan,
Figure 3 is a section on the lines III-III of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 shows in elevation the end of the handle with the spring gripping means removed.
Referring to the drawings which show an economical and convenient form of handle a tubular metal handle I is constructed from spring steel and preferably chromium plated. This handle is split longitudinally and its end is shaped as shown in Figure 4 to form a pair of arcuate prongs 2, 2.
Onto these prongs is fitted a clip 3 of the bulldog type, the prongs fitting inside the cylindrical body 4 of the clip and outside the members 5, 5 extensions of which form the jaws 6, 6 and lever handles 1, l.
The jaws 6, 6 are provided with a pair of pins 8, 8, in one of the jaws which register a pair of holes 9, 9 in the other jaw. These pins are positioned so that they wall pass through the slot or holes normally provided in the two-bladed Gillette type of razor blade ID. The blade I0 sits between the jaws as shown in Figure 3 so that one edge projects and the other edge lies inside the clip between the members 5, 5 and is thus protected and at the same time the user is protected from injury.
The lever handles are set at such an angle and are provided with turned over ends ll, H so that as shown in Figure 3 they serve to determine the angle at which the blade I0 is presented to the strop I2, by hearing on the strop.
It will be realised that the invention is in no way limited to this specific construction and furthermore the jaws of the clip or grip may be shaped to grip securely any specific type of razor blade. It will be realised that the device may be constructed so that any desired angle of blade to the strop may be obtained but it has been found that with the Gillette type of blade the optimum angle is 18.
What I claim is:
1. A holder for sharpening the wafer type of razor blade which includes a split tubular handle of spring steel, a pair of arcuate prongs formed on the end of the handle, a cylindrical spring member engageable around the prongs of the handle, a pair of razor blade gripping jaws carried by said spring member and which pass therethrough and project from the rear thereof to form handles for opening the jaws and guiding surfaces in cooperation with the corresponding outer surface of said cylindrical spring member, said jaws being so constructed and of such length and the angular relationship between said handles, jaws and corresponding outer surface of said cylindrical spring member being such that the blade will be positioned correctly With respect to a sharpening surface when one of said guiding surfaces and said outer surface are slidably positioned thereon, said jaws being tensioned by REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
