Be it known that ,T, VERNON CHARLES SNYDER, residing at Mountain Lakes, in the county of Morris, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Containers; and'l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention refers toimprovements in containers which may be used for cereals,
drugs, chemicals, tobacco, salt, coffee and other materials which may be kept in a paper or fiber receptacle. p
The particular ob'jectof the invention is to provide a container having a metal top made in such a manner that it will serve as an" effective sealfor the closed container and as a convenient and tight cover for said container after it has been opened by cutting the wall around the edge of said metal top. The cylindrical portion of the container may be made of paper or fiber either impregnated or not depending, upon the'nature of the -material to be placed therein. The bottom of said container may be made of material similar to that composing the cylindrical portionyor of metal, said bottom being attached to the cylindrical portion in any suitable manner.

sion is made in a circular piece of sheet metalthe bottom of the depression is shown at 4 and the top at 5. A groove 6 is then made in the cover, the container is then filled, the cover placed thereon and the outer edge 7 of said cover crimped to form a tight seal with the container wall.
A more effective seal may be obtained by filling the groove 6 with-paraffin or other suitable sealing material depending upon the natureof the material to be placed in The outer portion 7 of the cover is then crimped forcing the container wall into the groove.
The container is opened by inserting a knife shown at 9 into the groove 6 through the container wall and then cutting around the periphery of the cover so that it may be removed as'shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a portion 8 of the container wall being retained in the cover and forming a part thereof. The purpose of the groove 6 is to facilitate the cutting of the container wall and, together with the crimp portion 7, to serve as a guide for the knife so that a straight out may be made and an even surface 10 produced. It is apparent that the groove 6 should be about even with the lower edge of the crimped portion 7.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is illustrated the manner in which the cover is applied to the end of the container. Tn Fig. 5 the groove 6 is shown as filled with the sealing material 11 such as paraflin, and with this material in place'within the. groove the cover is slipped over the end of the container. Thereafter the lower rim 12 of the outer portion 7 of the cover is crimped or forced inwardly as illustrated, thus forcing the material of the container into the groove to a slight extent, the portion of the container so affected cooperating with the sealing material to. form a tight seal.
In the drawing the cylindrical wall 1 of the container is shown as being rightcir cular. However, this invention may be em bodiedina container, the horizontal section of which is not circular andthe invention is accordingly not limited in this respect.
I claim:
,1. A container of the type shown having a 'metal top crimped to the wall thereof and 2. A container of the type shown having a recessed metal top, means wherehy said top may be secured to said container and a groove extending around the periphery of the recessed portion of said metal top, the periphery of said top being formed as a flange lying parallel to the outer wall of therecess with the marginaledge of this flange terminating opposite said groove.
3. A container of the type shown having a recessed metal top crimped to the container wall, a groove extending around the periphery of the recessed portion of said top whereby the\ top may be removed by inserting a tool into said groove and cutting the container wall peripherally. 4. A metal top for a container of the type shown, having a recessed portion fitting tightly against the inner surface of the container wall, said top being crimped to said Well, a groove extending around the periphery of said recessed portion whereby the container may be opened by inserting a tool neoaeee into said groove anducutting the container wall peripherally.
5. A container of the type shown having a recessed metal top fitting tightly against the inner surface of the container wall, a groove extending around the periphery of the recessed portion of said top, the marginal edge of the outer portion of said top terminating adjacent said groove and being crimped into the outer surface of the container wall forc crimped into the outer surface of the con-.
