, UNITED iSTATES 1,575,154 PATENT OFFICE.
ROLLIN I.. DRAKE, OF PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE TEXAS COMPANY,
- OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF TEXAS.
cLosURE iron CONTAINERS.
Application inea september 23,1922. serial Np. 589,973.
To all whom 'it may concern.' Be it known that I, ROLLIN L. BRAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Port Arthur, county of Jefferson, and State 5 of Texas, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Closures for Containers, of which the following is a speci-- i fication. n
This invention relates to closure means for containers and has special reference to sealing and closure means for metallic rcceptacles.
This invention contemplates the provislon of a cap, lid, top, or other closure that is 1'6 adapted to-be spun or rolled into position in sucha manner as to form antight seal and provided with a screw neck or thimble -adapted to serve as an outlet for a container.
Various features and advantages of the invention will be set forth hereinafter and I will now describe the same with reference to the drawings and point out the novel features thereof in the appended claims'.
In the drawings which show in detail caps and closures constituting examples of theu invention and'also indicate the process of making same: f:
Figure 1 isa sectional elevation of a device constituting an kexample of the invention and showing the parts assembled ready for the crimping operation.
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation of the device of Figure 1 at the completion of the crimping operation.
Figure 3 is a modified form of the invention. y In the example of the invention shown in Figures 1 and 2 10 represents a portion of a can or container equipped with a filling 40 or dispensing opening about which is formed a peripheral flange 11 which is preferabl" constructed with a curved portion 12. A substantially concave Vor dished cap member 13 is provided to form a closurey in or over the opening and is preferably of suicient concavity as to extend: to the base of the flange or somewhat below the base as illus trated. The cap is preferably constructed with the edge 14 bent or turned, as shown in Figure 1, so'that it may readily be assembledin position on the flange readyv for the capping or crimping operation. A neck or screw t imble 15 is inserted within the cap member '13. i y With the parts thus assembled a capping gage 1n a groove in the other,
The neck 15 may be secured in various ways besides being rolled in and expanded within the cap 13: For example, the neck 15 may be provided with an externally threaded portion adapted to cooperate with an interiorly threaded portion of the cap 13, or theneck or the cap, the one or the other, t may be equipped with lugs adapted t0 enor the parts may be attached by soldering. The screw thimble 15 is povided with a cap 16 which is preferably knurled as at 17. In using' this form of cap the bottom of the member 13 .may be cut out by the customer or consumer and the cap 16 serves as a removable closure to protect the contents of the container.
In Figure 3 is shown a container of substantially cylindrical form and having ya lid or end 18. The can or container 22 is equipped near the end thereof with a shoulder preferably in the form of a curved portion 19 and the lid 18, which is of substan-- tially concave or dish'ed formation, is adapted to be drawn land bulged or expanded against this curved portion to form the curved joint shown and the outer edge 14 of the lid is turned over the end of the can so as to form a tight closure. Y The/can or container 22 isprovided with a screw neck or thimble 20 fitted into the therein as shown. A threaded cap or lid 21 provides a movable yclosure for the container, y N- It has been found that the sanitary seahb described herein effects a very e-Hicient clo- I prior to the crimping operation. In the case of containers intended for volatile or inflammable fiuids, such .1s petroleum oils, particularly the lighter products thereof, it is generally desirable to use a sealing material. Where the cap, lid, or seal is put inV place after the container is filled with fluid it is best to employ a sealing material that is insoluble in the fluid and which will dry rapidly.
It is evident that various modifications of my invention lmay be made Within the spirit and scope thereof and I desire that onlyY such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
What I claim is: f 1. A container having adjacent an'end thereof a curved portion, a closure for said container comprising a substantially concave member the edge of which is spun over.
`said end and a portion of which is rolled against said curved portion so as to -make' a curved joint therewith, a threaded thimble p r'olled into said concave member and a cap therefor..V i i www@ 2. In combination with a. container having an opening therein and formed with a peri heral flange provided with a curved portion, a substantially concave cap spun over said ange and expanded against-said curved 'portion so as toform a closure in said opening and aY threaded thimble rolled into said cap.
3. In combination with a container hav? ing an opening therein and formed with a.
movable closure member for said cylindril cal member.
5. In combination with a container having an opening therein and formed with a peripheral flange, a substantially concave cap rolled over said flange sore-as to form a closure Yin said opening, a threaded thimble expanded within the concave cap, and a detachable closure member on said'thimble.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my Yhand this 1st day of September, 1922.
ROLLIN L. DRAKE.
