DETACHABLE SHOE HEEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH STAMBERGER, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmproven'ients in detachable Shoe Heels, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable shoe heels and has for its primary object to provide cooperating devices carried by a shoe heel and the removable lower lift that is preferably formed of rubber for forming an interlocking connection therebetween.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ren'iovable lower lift or heel for shoes wherein a manually operable latch device carried by the shoe is adapted for intel-locking engagement with keeper pins carried by the removable lift or heel for re taining the latter in position on the shoe, the detachable mounting of the lower lift permitting interchangeability from one shoe to another to compensate forruneven' wearing thereof.
lVith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the'same consists in the novel construction, eombination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustratedin the accom 'ianying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing forming a part. of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughoutthe several views,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a detachable shoe heel constructed in accord ance with the present invention, the shoe and integral heel portion thereof being fragmentarily illustrated by dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the latch plate detached from the fixed portion of the shoe heel and interlocked with the removable heel portion,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the stationary plate of the latch device,
Figure l is a perspective view of the sliding plate of the latch device,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the de tachable heel, showing the prongs carried thereby for interlocking engagement with the latch device.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of the shoe heel showing the groove in one side of the prong to receive a portion of the sliding plate of the latch device, and
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on line VII-VII of Figure 6, show-v ing the prong countersunk within the detachable heel section and provided with a series of spaced grooves in one side thereof.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated, a detachable heel for shoes, the latter being illustrated by dotted lines in Figure 1, and including an upper 1, an integral or rigid heel portion 2 and the detachable heel sec tion 3 illustrated by full lines.
The detachable heel section 3 as shown in Figures 5 to 7, has a plurality of prongs embedded therein, each prong including a shank l carrying a disk head 5 that is countersunk within the heel section 3, the outer end of the shank being tapered or pointed as at 6, while the side of each prong shank t facing the rear end of the heel section 3 is provided with a plurality of notches 7 as clearly shown in Figure 7.
The latch device for retaining the detachable heel. section 3 upon the permanently mounted. heel section 2 embodies relatively lined and sliding plates 8 and 9, respec tively, the plate 8 being of the general configuration of the detachable heel section 6 as shown. in Figures 2 and 3 and having a series of peripherally positioned openings 10 for the passage of fastening devices 11 for anchoring the same to the heel portion 2. A pairof fingers 12 are struck out from the plate 8 with the ends thereof directed toward each other and spaced from the plate. the fingers being transversely aligned. Similarly formed fingers 13 and 14: are carried by the plate 8, the fingers l3 and 14L being respectively positioned at opposite sides of the longitudinal axis of the plate' with the ends thereof directed toward each other. An opening 15 is provided in the plate 8 intermediate each pair of fingers 13 and 14, while another opening 16 in the plate 8 is disposed adjacent the rear edge thereof. The central portion of the plate 8 is struck out to provide an upstanding finger 17 directed toward the forward edge of the plate.
The sliding plate 9 shown more clearly 1n Figure 4, is of T-shape embodying a longitudinal leg 18 and a cross-head 19, the leg 18 being provided with an opening 20 ad jacent the outer end thereof, while the opposite end is provided with a sliding opening 21. W'lien the sliding plate 9 is mounted upon the fixed plate 8, the angle finger 17 projects downwardly through the slotted opening 21 in the sliding plate, while the leg 18 of the latter is positioned between the struck-out fingers 12 that constitute a guide therefor. The opposite ends of the cross head 19 are positioned beneath the struckout fingers 13 and 14, and each end of the cross-head 19 is provided with an opening 22, theopeningsQO and 22 in the sliding plate cooperate with the openings 16 and 15 in the fixed plate in a manner presently'to appear.
The cross-head 1-9 of the sliding plate earries a forward extension 23 that is bent downwardly and return bent as at 2 1 and provided with a pin extension 25 that is aligned with the angle finger 17, a coil spring 26 inclosing at its ends the lug and finger for normally holding the sliding plate at its limit oi? movement in one. direction that is arrested by the tor-ward struck-out fingers 13 and 14s, and in this position the rear edge walls of the openings 20 and 22 are spaced slightly l orwardly of the rear edge walls of the openings 16 and 15.
A cavity is formed in the permanent heel portion 2 to accommodate the mounting of the latch device as shown in Figure 1, the latch device being permanently secured to the heel portion 2, while the detachable heel section 33 carries the prongs i. In mounting the detachable heel section to the pern'ianent heel section 2, the tapering ends 6 oil? the prongs are l orced through the registering openings in the slit n and lixed plates, the prongs shifting the sliding plate 9 against the tension of the spring 26 to position the rear walls of the openings 20 and -22 for reception in the desired groove 7, and upon such positioning of the prongs. the spring 26 will forwardly shit't the sliding plate 9 to the position shown in Figure 2, whereby the detachable heel. section 3 is interlocked with the permanent heel section 2. In a detachable shoe heel, a permanent heel portion and a detachable heel section, and interlocking connections between the same, said connect-ions including a. fixed plate carried by the permanent heel portion, guide fingers struck out there'fron'i, a substantially T-shaped sliding latch plate mounted on the fixed plate and guided by said fingers, the fixed plate and ends of the latch plate having registering openings therein. and latch prongs carried by the detachable heel section adapted to be positioned in the: registering openings and having side grooves to receive the rear walls of the openings in the latch plate, the forward end of the sliding lat-ch plate being return bent, and a coil spring interposed between the return bent portion of the latch plate and the fixed plate for holding the latch plate in engagement with the prongs carried by the detachable heel. section.
2. In a detachable shoe heel, a permanent heel portion and a detachable heel section, and interlocking connections between the same, said connections including a fixed plate carried by the permanent heel portion, guide lingers struck out therefrom, a sliding. latch, plate mounted on the fixed plate and guided by said fingers, the fixed plate and latch plate having registering openings therein, latch prongs carried by the detachable heel section adapted tobe positioned in the registering openings and having side grooves to receive the rear walls of the openings in the latch plate, a pin carried by the latch plate, a finger carried by the fixed plate, and a coil spring enclosing at its ends the'pin and finger for holding the latch plate in engagement with the prongs carried by the detachable heel section.
