N. CHRISTENSEN I MATCH SCRATCHER Filed 0C: l4 192?.
WITNBSIM Patented Aug. 5, 1924;.
UNHIED" STATES NIELS CHRISTENSEN, OF ASTORIA, OREGON.
MATCH SGB/ATGHEB'.
Application filed October 14, 1922. Serial N0. 594,632.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIELs CHRISTENSEN, a citizen of Denmark, residin at Astoria, in the county of Clatsop and tate of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match Scratchers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of an extremely simple, easily attached and efiicient match scratcher for personal wear-i. e., for use on one of the outer garments of a man.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an elevation of my novel match scratcher.
Figures 2 and 3 are sections taken in the planes indicated by the lines 22 and 33, respectively, of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a detail view illustrating the preferred application of the match scratcher,
7 -1. e., the application and attachment of the same to the inner side of one of the lower tips of a vest.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
My match scratcher is preferably formed of thin sheet metal, though it may be made of any other material compatible with its purpose without involving departure from the scope of my invention as definedin my appended claim.
The scratcher is preferably in the form of a plate elliptical in outline, and in its longitudinal central portion which is disposed and guarded as shown in Figures 1 to 3, it is provided with a series of transverse alternate ribs 1 and depressions 2 so as to afford an adequate scratching surface. At its sides and ends the plate is provided with deflected portions 3 and 4, respectively, so that the plate as a whole is slightly concavo-convex in the direction of its length and also in the direction of its width. Adjacent to its ends and also adjacent to the centers of its side edges the plate is provided with apertures 5. I
Manifestly the plate like scratcher is adapted to be expeditiously and easily attached by stitches 6 to the inner side of the tip portion 7 of a vest, and when so applied the scratcher will be available for convenient use, it being simply necessary for the user to turn up the vest tip and then strike a match against the roughened surface of the device.
In virtue of the side and end deflections which are arranged outwardly beyond the scratching surface there is little liability of a spark reaching the material of the vest incident tothe match striking operation, and it will also be noted that the concave character of the inner side of the device is advantageous inasmuch as it permits a portion of the material of the vest to rest within the scratcher and to support the same so as to afford a solid surface for the scratching operation. At the same time the portion of the dress material resting snugly within the scratcher at the concave side thereof tends to prevent edgewise movement of the scratcher relative to the vest and in that way removes strain from the connecting stitches. In addition to the practical advantages ascribed to the scratcher it will be noted that the same is extremely simple and inexpensive and is adapted to be readily applied without the employment of skilled labor, and when the scratcher is properly embellished it is calculated to form a finished appearance to avest.
While the scratcher is designed primarily to be applied to a vest as stated, it is obviously within the purview of my invention to attach the scracher to any part of a vest or other outer garment.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a match en a concavo-convex form in length and width; the said deflections each being provided with a transverse aperture, and the concave rear side of. the scratcher being adapted to snugly receive the cloth of a vest or other garment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
NIELS CHRISTENSEN.
