INVE NTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM T. MERSEREAU, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DASH-BOARDS FOR VEHICLES.
S ecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 50,341, dated April 28, 1874; application filed December 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM TMERsE- REAU, of Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use, Improvements in the Manufacture of Metallic BindingsforDash-Boards ofOa-rriages,Trunks, and other purposes; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a view of my improved metallic binding for dash-boards of carriages. Fig. 2 is a top view of the wire and perforated plate used. Fig. 3 is a view of the perforated plate employed in the drawings.
Like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a binding for dash-boards, by combining a solid metallic rod or bar, having a groove or slit in its interior edge, with a perforated metallic plate, one of whose edges is received into said groove and attached to said rod or bar by being drawn through dies, so that the two shall present the appearance of being formed from the same piece of metal, all as hereinafter set forth, the object of the invention being the production of 'a me allic binding for dash-boards for carriages, for trunks, and other articles, at a low cost, and which, when so used, shall render the articles more durable, and give to them a finished and ornamental appearance.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A shows the binder, formed of brass or any suitable metal, rolled or made circular in shape. This binder A is slotted upon its interior edge, as at a, to allow a plate, B, to be inserted or received within it, and after this has been done, the binder A'and plate B are drawn through a die or series of dies, and the metal of the binder A is closed tightly upon that portion of the plate B inserted within it, so that the binder A and plate B present the appearance of being formed from one piece of metal. The plate B is provided with a series of perforations, b, and may be made of one entire piece of metal, or anynumber of pieces of metal, as preferred.
Having been thus constructed, the leather of which the dash-board is formed may be stiched to the binder by stitches passed through the perforations in the plate B, and may be applied to trunks and other articles in the same manner.
When applied to the dash-boards of carriages it adds greatly to the appearance of the same, and increases their durability. When applied to trunks it serves to protect the leather of which the same is composed from injury in transportation.
The binder A may be ornamented in any desired manner, and if preferred, other metal besides brass may be used that will answer the purpose intended.
I do not claim a solid, or hollow, or grooved binder for dash-boards of carriages, asI am aware the same has been used.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new, is
A binder for dashboards of carriages, for trunks, and other articles, composed of the solid circular plate or wire A, slotted to receive the perforated plate B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
W. T. MERSER EAU.
