MEANS FOR FASTENING TIPS TO UMBRELLA R-IBS.
Application filed February 12,1924. Serial No. 692,225. y
To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOHN LUTZ and VAYNE S. EVANS, bothv'citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and usef ful Means for Fastening Tips to Umbrella Ribs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention generally stated, relates to,
umbrellas, parasols, sun-shades and the like and has more especial relation tothe provision of novel means for securing a tip to the ends of paragon or fluted ribs thereof.
When reducing the end of a paragon or tinted rib for the purpose of forming a cylindrical portion for the outer end thereof to receive a Celluloid or bone t-ip, it is common practice to make said cylindrical portion slightly tapered fromthe rib body toward the rib outer end. A Celluloid or b one tip is then positioned over Said tapered portion of the rib and secured thereto by means of glue or the like. Such procedure tends not only to slow down production but results in amore or less unsatisfactory product or article of manufacture, since tips secured in this manner frequently separate from a rib `due to various causes. The leading object of the present invention is to overcome the above described disadvantageous features and to provide a ribtip construction wherein the tip is frictionally retained on the rib by novel means and not only is production expedited but a more efficient and durable article is produced at less cost.
A further object is to provide a. co-inbination, connection and arrangement of parts for attaining the results sought by said leading object. Other and further objects notl at the time appearing will be hereinafter referred to.
For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings, forms thereof which are at present preferred by us, since the same will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which our invention consists may be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instruinentalities as herein shown and described. Figure l, represents a perspective view of a. portion of 4an umbrella, parasol, sun-shade" or like rib illustrating the construction of the tip-receiving end.y I
Figure 2, represents a View in cross-section, taken upon the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3, represents a View in plan of the parts shown in Figure l,
Figure 4, represents Ya view in longitudinal section of a rib having applied thereto a celluloid or other tip in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings:-
Inl the practice of the invention an end of a paragon or fluted rib is reduced by bending over of the opposed marginal portions to form a tubular portion l, which Yextends from the body portion 2 outwardly, and is of uniform cross-section throughout its extent. The juxtaposed edges 3 3 of the tubular portion'are spaced apart form4 vof the portion l, and at the junction of said parts l and 5 there is formed an annular shoulder 6. 7 designates a tip, made of any desired suitable material, and which may be of any desired configuration, as fashion dictates; such tip is provided with a central, elongated uniform bore 8, which is of a diameter to properly receive the part l, of the rib 2. The smaller section 5 is slightly smaller than the diameter of the hole 8, in the tip 7, while the larger section 3 is slightly larger than the diameter of said hole-8. n l
To position a tip'7 upon a rib 2, the terminal 5 is inserted within the bore 8 of said tip, which serves to center the tip with respect to said rib. By moving the rib and tip towards each other in any suitable manner, the bore of the tip completely covers theresilient bearing l, of the rib. Since ythe edges 3 3 of portion l are spaced apart,
a tight it between the tip 7 and rib 2 can be effected since a yielding bearing is pron if desired.
It will be understood that the terminal 5 is substantially a cylinder in cross section, as is also the larger section l, whose walls are slightly flared as at 9 where they merge into the body of the rib 2. The bore or hole 8 in the tip is also substantially a truc cylinder, so that when the parts are assembled as seen in Figure 4, they are in tight frictional engagement. Y
It will now be apparent that we have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while we have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars ywithout departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
`Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of thecharacter stated, an umbrella rib having the' end thereof formed into two differentsections, the terminal section being the smaller diameter and the juxtaposed edges of saidv sections being separated by a longitudinally extending slot, so as to permit said edges to be compressed towards'eacli other.
2. In a device of the character stated, an umbrella rib having the end thereof formed into two different sections, the terminal secw tion being the smaller diameter, and the juxtaposed edges of said sections being separated by a longitudinally extending slot, so as to permit said edges to be compressed towards each other, said larger section being flared and merging into the walls of the rib.
3. The combination of an umbrella tip having a hole of substantially uniform diameter therein, and an umbrella rib having the end thereof formed into two different sections, the terminal section being the smaller diameter, and there being a longitudinally extending slot in said sections to permit compression of the latter, so as to hold said tip inposition on said rib by frictional contact.
4. The combination of an umbrella tip having a hole of substantially uniform diameter therein, and an un'ibrella rib having the end thereof formed into two different sections, the terminal section being the smaller diameter,l and there being a longitudinally extending slot in said sections to permit compression of the latter, so as to hold said tip in position on said rib by frici tional contact, said larger section being flared outwardly and merging into the walls of said rib.
