J. D. MURRAY NOZZLE TIP Filed Nov. 19, 1923 as f I i [Y It .AL i 16 D. MURY, OF SAN FCISGQ, CALIFORNIA.
NOZZLE "TIP.
nppllcation'flled November is, 1923. Serial No. 875,511.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. MURRAY,
a citizen of! the United States, residing at city and count of San Francisco and State of California, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle Tips, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a spray tip designed for *use generally where it is desired to spray a mixture under pressure either in the form of a fiat stream or in a jet.
Theinvention relates articularly to that type of spray 'illustrat in my co-pending application #599,994, filed Nov. 10, 1922 and has for its objects to provide a tip having a longer life and adapted for more universal use than'that illustrated in the disclosure of the application.
The objects of the present invention are to provide within the bore throu h which the fluid passes under pressure free y mountable fluid-actuated means preferably spherical in form against which the im act stream strikes on its passage through t e here; to provide a slotted tip for removable ositioning over the cylindrical discharge ore when 1t,is desired to convert the jet stream issuing from the bore-into a flat stream; and in the broad as ,ects of the invention provide meansofor reaking up a stream flow through a nozzle into a fine spray overcoming the liability of the stream flow under pressure of cutting out the nozzle.
With the above mentioned and other objects in view,'the invention consists in the novel-construction and combination of parts "hereinafter-dosed, illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, and set forth in the claims hereto appen ed, it being understood that various changes. in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resor to without departing from the s irit or sacrificing any 0 invention.
Fig. l is a view inside elevation of the preterr emu-"meat of my invention illustrating the base and retaining collar in lontudinal section.
ig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional viewof the prefe emiment of my inven-, tion with the retaining collar removed and illustrating the ball atomizing member in the discharge bore.
the advantages 0 the Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a view in end elevation of the discharge tip.
Fig. 5 is a lon itudinal sectional view tip removed from thewith the body an base and Fig. 6 is a view of die body with the tip removed illustrating the use of the body wien a jet stream is desired.
In the drawings forming a part of the application and illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 indicates a tubular base having a peripherally threaded end 2 and the terminal end of the base is formed with a body receiving seat 3. Removably ositioned within the seat 3 is the cylindrical end vof a tubular body 4 having a tubular reduced discharge end 5, the body t being provided with an inlet bore 6 and the discharge end being provided with a discharge bore 7 of a diameter greater than that of the inlet bore 6. The
sides of the bores are preferably parallel and within the discharge here is loosely mounted a ball or spherical atomizing-memher 8 of a. diameter greater than that of the inlet bore but less than the diameter of the discharge bore. The member 8 is loosely confined within the bore between the transversely disposed'cylindrical stop pins 9 extending across the bore adjacent its 0 posite ends. It will be observed that a uid stream flow under pressure entering the dischar e bore will stroke the member 8 and will lie deflected by its surface toward the side walls of the bore and the action of the stream flow in forcing the member Sagainst the outer member 9 will cause the member to move rapidly within its confined space and not assume any one set position, thus insuring breaking up of the stream flow prior to its passing from the dischar e and of the bore. When a jet stream is esired and the body 4 ispositioned within the seat 3. and a threaded collar'is positioned over the discharge end of thebody-and is threaded outh; the base 1 until the flange 10 of the collar engages the flange 11 of the base to tightly retain the base in its seat.
To provide a means for converting the atomized material into a fiat stream 1' removabl position over the contracted'end 5 of the ass, a. tip 12 transversely slotted at 13 and of the conventional s tip type,
Elli) the same being provided on its under side with a domed chamber 14 and registering with the discharge end'of the discharge bore 7. The base of the tip is flanged as at 15 and when the same is positioned on the reduced and 5 of the body 4 it is retained thereon by the collar positioned thereover and threaded onto the base 1 until its flange 10 engages the flange 15 of the tip.
I have provided by this construction a nozzle tip adapted for universal use such as paint spraying, garden hose work, irrigation or, in fact, an use where a fluid stream under pressure is esired to be projec.
I claim:
1. A discharge nozzle comprising a y provided with cylindrical axially aligned inlet and discharge bores having parallel walls, the discharge bore bein of eater diameter thanthemlet here, an a sp erical member loosely held within said discharge here at a pointinwardly from the discharge end of the discharge bore for breaking up the stream flow passing therethrough.
2. A discharge nozzle comprising a hody provided with axially aligned inlet and discharge bores, the discharge bore being of v greater diameter than the inlet bore, a pair of stop pins ending transversely of the discharge here and disposedin spaced relation, and a ball looselyconfined within said bore between said stop pins.
3. A discharge nozzle comprising a body provided with axially aligned inlet and discharge bores, the discharge bore bei of greater diameter than the inlet bore, a all loosely held within the discharge bore for breaking up the stream flow passing thereneoaeor through and a slotted tip over the end of said ischarge bore.
4. A discharge nozzle comprising a body provided with axially aligned inlet and discharge bores, the discharge bore being of eater diameter than the inlet bore, a ball oosel held within the discharge bore for breaking up the stream flow passing there- 'throngh, a transversely slotted tip removabl position over the disehar-. end of sai discharge 'bore, and means or retaining the tip in Men thereon.
5. A dischar nozzle com rising a body provided with axially aligned inlet and discharge bores, the discharge here being of diameter than the inlet bore, a ball oosely held within the discharge bore for breaking up the stream flow passing therethrough, a transversely slotted tip removably sitioned over the discher end of said recharge bore, a biise tor receiving said body, and a threaded collar bearing on said tip and threadably engan the base for retaming the tip on the um and the body removabl positioned in the base.
6. A discharge nozzle comprising a body provided with axially aligned inlet and discharge bores, one of a diameter larger than the other, a ball within one of said bores for breaking up the streamfiow passing therethrough, and a pair of cylindrical rs disposed transversel across the bore containin the ball for con ning the bell therein, sai ball being of a diameter less than that of its receiving bore.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification.
