Be it known that I, PAUL M. SABLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Belt Buckle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved belt buckle designed for co-action with a button on an associated garment, whereby the normal relation between buckle and garment is maintained.

Its object is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device of this kind, the same being capable of ready manipulation and adapted to be worn with comfort, the securing means being normally concealed and in no way detrimental to the appearance of the buckle when in use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figs. 1 and 2, are perspective views of buckles embodying my invention; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 3.

Having reference to the drawings, where in similar reference characters are employed to designate similar parts throughout the several views, I have used the reference letter a to indicate a buckle body, which, as shown, comprises a front plate 10 and upper and lower flanges or plates 11 and 12 turned rearward therefrom. An ordinary aw member 13 pivoted at its ends 13 in the plates 11 and 12 at one end of the buckle body grip one end of a belt li and an ordinary cam roller 15 mounted in oblique slots 16 in said plates at the other end of the belt 14:. My invention embodies the feature of retaining the buckle in place, no claim being made to the belt securing features of the buckle. Therefore, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular body structure or buckle securing means. My improved means for retaining a buckle includes a horizontal abutment and a hanger I).

In the forms shown, the upper flange 11 constitutes the abutment and the back plate 17 turned downward from said flange and formed with a button hole therein comprises the hanger. Said button hole is designed to receive a button 18 attached at the waist line to a pair of trousers or other garment, the larger portion 19 of the holebeing halfround and communicating at its straight side with a downwardly extended restricted portion or slot 20. The lips 21 comprising the opposed parts of the hanger at the junc tion of said opening and slot are flared backward for two reasons, first to facilitate in applying the button to the hanger and removing the same therefrom and secondly to form anti-slipping lugs to engage the garment near the point where the button is attached thereto. With the buckle in normal position, as shown in Fig. 4;, the shank 18 thereof rests in the bottom of the slot 20, sideward and upward movement of the bucklewith respect to the trousers 22 being prevented by said buckle. The settling of the buckle is attended with resistance due to the gripping action of the lips 21 against the trousers and also with the guiding of the button 18 into engagement with the flange 11. Thus it will be seen that any displace ment of thebuckle from precisely appropriate position relative to the waist line is limited and that in the event of such displacement there is no danger of accidental withdrawal of the button from the hanger b. With the button 18 tipped slightly with respect to the hanger b, or vice versa, theattachment of the button to the hanger or its detachment therefrom is readily accomplished. However, without thus inclining the button with the shank thereof at the bottom of the slot, said button is secure against removal from the button hole.

Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by' Letters Patent is:

1. A buckle comprising a body for at tachment to opposite ends of a belt, a flange reaching back from said body and a hanger plate depending from said flange, said hanger plate having a button hole therein to receive a button attached to a garment, said button hole including a half-round opening communicating medially at its flat side with a downwardly reaching slot, lips comprising those opposed portions of the hanger 2 V inmate? flange and thereby limit movement between the buckle and garment. 2. A buckle comprising a body for attachment to opposite ends of a belt and a back plate carried by the body and formed 'with a button hole therein to receive a button,

said button hole including a half round opening communicating medially at its fiat side with a downwardly reaching slot, lips consisting of the opposed portions of said plate at the mouth of the restricted part of the button hole, the lips being flared back to facilitate the application to and the removal of the button from the button hole,

said lips serving to form anti-slipping lugs for engagement with the garment to which the button is attached.
