Be it known that I, EDWARD E. PEAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in belt buckles and has as its object to provide a buckle of simple construction embodying means for engaging a loop upon the front of a pair of trousers in such a manner that the trousers will be supported and thus prevented from slipping down beneath the belt, and vice versa the belt will be pre vented from riding up over the top of the trousers, the means provided serving also to prevent slipping of the belt in a lateral direction.

Another object of the invention is to provide a belt buckle embodying the holding means above described, the presence of which means will not in any way interfere with the adjustment of the belt through the buckle or with the securing and loosening of the buckle in applying and removing the belt.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt buckle constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the buckle.

In the drawings, the body of the buckle is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and the same preferably comprises a plate of sheet metal which may be ornamented in any desired manner and which is provided at its upper and lower edges with flanges 2 3 respectively, which flanges may project inwardly from the plane of the plate. The buckle may embody any desired means for the permanent connection of one end of the belt (not shown) and any desired means for securing the other end portion of the belt, such for example as a bail 4 in the first instance, and a friction bar 5 working in diagonal slots 6 in the flanges 2 and 3, in the latter instance. As these devices do not form any part of the present invention, they may be of any desired nature, and likewise the body of the buckle may be in some form other than that of a plate.

bearing openings 7 and 8 are formed in the flanges 2 and 3 respectively at a point preferably substantially midway between the ends of the buckle, and the flange 3 is further formed with an arcuate recess 9 which communicates with the opening 8. A. bar .10 is pivotally mounted at its upper and lower ends in the openings 7 and 8 so that it may have rotative movement, and in order that this movement ma be limited, the bar is formed at its lower end with a radially projecting lug 11 which Works in the recess 9, engaging one end wall of the recess when the bar 10 is at one limit of its rotary movement in one direction and engaging the other end wall of the recess when the bar is at the other limit of its movement. An arm 12 projects substantially at right angles laterally from the bar 10 preferably at a point substantially midway bet-ween the upper and lower ends of this bar, and the arm is provided with an upwardly projecting finger or hook 13 which is designed to be engaged upwardly through a loop 14 of any suitable nature secured upon the front of the trousers at the waist line.

From the foregoing description and by reference to the drawings it will be understood that in the use of the device, the bar 10 is to be rotated so that the arm 12 will project inwardly from the rear side of the buckle whereupon the finger 13 at the end of the arm may be engaged upwardly through the loop 14, and then the bar may be rotated to swing the arm 12 and the finger 10 carried thereby in a forward direction so as to position the said arm and finger within the plane touched by the rear edges of the flanges 2 and 3 so that the presence of the arm 12 and finger 13 will not be noticeable to the wearer of the belt. When the device is employed in the manner stated, the buckle will rest flat against the front of the trousers as in the case of the ordinary buckle, and at the same time the engagement of the finger 13 in the loop 14 will prevent the trousers riding down beneath the belt and on the other hand pre vent the belt riding up over the edge of the trousers. Also this engagement will prevent the belt shifting laterally about the trousers. In removing the belt, the movement of the buckle away from the trousers will result in the arm 12 being swung rearwardly outwardly so as to permit of ready disengagement of the finger 13 from the loop 14.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. The combination with a belt buckle, of an arm supported for swinging movement upon the rear side of the buckle body, and a loop-engaging finger projecting upwardly from the said arm.

2. The combination with a belt buckle, of an arm supported for swinging movement upon the rear Side of the buckle body, a loop engaging finger projecting upwardly from the said arm, and means for limiting the swinging movement of the said arm.

3. The combination with a belt buckle, of a bar rotatably mounted upon the rear side oi the buckle body, an arm projecting latcrally from the said bar, and a loop-engaging finger projecting upwardly from the said arm.

4C. The combination with a belt buckle, of a bar rotatably mounted upon the rear side of the buckle body, an arm projecting laterally from the said bar at an intermediate point in the length thereof, a loop-engaging finger projecting upwardly from the end of the arm, and means for limiting the rotatire movement of the said bar.
