IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCET-BUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,137, dated April 2,8, 1874; application led Y March 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. CoLLIs, of Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in FaucetBuSheS, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis an elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical section, showing the several parts separated one from the other; Fig. 3, a plan view of the bush itself, and Fig. 4, a plan view of the cap.
My present invention is an improvement on a faucet-bush for which a patent has recently' been allowed me.
The object of that invention was to provide a packing to prevent leaking, which was accomplished by providing each bush with such packing. This packing is usually made of rubber, and the expense of furnishing all of the bushes with the same is considerable.
The object of this invention is to secure the advantage of a bush provided with a packing, with less expense, which I accomplish by making the complete bush in two parts, one portion of which is to be inserted in the keg 0r barrel and remain there permanently, the other of which is to be attached to the bush in the barrel only when such barrel is boing drawn from.
In the drawing, A represents a metal bush, provided with a screw-thread, which is to be inserted in the keg -or barrel, and there remain. As shown, the top of this bush. A is provided with a narrow ilange, a, having two recesses, c. This ilange is cam-shaped upon two sides, commencing at the points c c, as represented at d. In the upper end of A is a shallow recess, forming a shoulder or seat to receive the lower end of the packing-ring O. B is a cap. It is provided with two hooks, I) b, on the under side, adapted to pass into the notches c c and engage with the iiange c, for the purpose of holding the cap B 'in place. This cap B is recessed on the inside, forming a shoulder, i, near the top, and in such recess is placed a rubber packing-ring, O, of such width as to extend a little below the lower edge of B, as represented in Fig. 1.
In use each keg to which a faucet is to be applied is provided with-the bush A, and the dealer, who retails the contents of the keg or barrel, will be supplied with a number of the caps B, provided with rings C, equal to the number of kegs or ba-rrels likely to be used at the same time 5 and such dealer will apply one of the caps with its packing to each keg into which a faucet is to be inserted, and when the faucet is withdrawn the cap will also be removed to be applied to the next keg. By this construction a small number of caps and packing-rings will be sufcient for a large number of kegs or barrels.
As represented, the cap B can be tightly secured in place by means of the hooks b and cams cl,- but I do not limit myself to this method for holding the cap in place. It is provided with a flange upon its lower edge, with recesses similar to c c, and the iiange might pass beneath hooks inserted into the stave of the keg, or beneath the heads of screws adapted to that purpose. The lower end of the packing-ring rests in the recess in the flange a, and when the several parts are in place leakage will be effectually prevented, and the faucet will be held in place by the elastic packing without accurate fitting ofthe metal parts.
It would be possible to make the cap B and the packing O in one piece from some elastic material, especially if the same should be supported by a metal band or hoop, but I regard the form shown and described preferable.
What I claim as new is as follows:
1. The cap B, provided with hooks b and elastic packing O, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The cap B, provided with hooks I) and elastic packing C, in combination with metal bush A having cam d and screw-thread and ilange a, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
