JOHN LE MAY, F AURORA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AURORA. METAL COMPANY, OF
- AURORA, ILLINOIS, A COREOBATINJOF ILLINOIS.
CONTAI Application tiled February 23, 1923. Serial No. 620,737.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LE MAY, a citizen of the United States, residing' at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvement in containers and more es ecially to a container l0 or box adapted for olding packing segments such as are used for packing the valve stems and piston rods of locomotives.
The segments of this'kind of packing are designed to t together to form a unit packing. When the segments arein. place on the valve stem or piston rod in the retainer cage, they cannot become separated or displaced. In shipping the segments, however, in containers it is necessary to provide some means to kee ,them in pro er position with respect to eac other. If t 's is not done, the segments will become disordered in the container which is likely to brine' some of the sharp edges into contact with the smooth surfaces with consequent injury to the segments. It is obvious, also, that the packing segments present a much neater and more attractive appearance when roperly arranged in the containers, than it disordered.
My improved container is also so'desi ed that the sharp square edges of the pac ing segments may be accommodated in the contalner without danger of injury to the container or the segments. My container is so e5 Shar edges permits the segments of the packin to t snugly against the bottoms and sides of the box, thus preventing any rattling or movement of the pieces. I
@ther features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as l proceed with my s ecification.
In that orm of device embodying the fee.- tures of my invention shown in the accom panying drawin s, Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the improve container, wit the cover removed showing the packing segments in place, Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the cover, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the box, and Fig. '4; is a vertical sectional view taken as indicated by the line 4 of Fig. 1, showing the box with the segments resting on top ott another similar empty box.
As shown in the drawings, the container comprises a substantial cylindrical metal box designed that such accommodation for these including the box proper 10, and the lcover 11. The cover 11 is adapted to form a telescopic fit over the box 10, as shown in Fig., 4. rlhe metallic packing segments are shown in Fig. '1, inplace in the box as indicated by 13, 13. These segments when in proper osition as shown in Fig. l, form a ring, w ich lies against the circular side of the box 10. In order to hold these segments in proper position in the form of this ring, the bottom of the box 10 -is provided with a centrally arranged circular raised or olset part 14, the diameter of which is equal to the internal diameter of the ring formed by the packing segments. This circular raised part 111, further acts as a form or core to hold the segments 13 in roper lace. The cover 11 is provided Wit a similar centrally arranged circular odset part 15 which bears against the inner edges of the packing segments 13 at their uppe'rzends, to assist in retaining them in proper positionin the box.
rThe bottom of the box, at its outer edge is also provided with a 'circular de ression or groove 17. This groove is forme for the purpose or accommodating the sharp square edges 18 of the segments. It is practically impossible to form a box, especially out of sheet metal..mitin@L perfectly square internal corner. Since the corners 18 or the packing segments are perfectly squares-.nd sharp they would cut into the corner of the box if it were rounded. Such cutting 'would .injure the box and also the edges of the packing segments. The provision of the groove 17, however, atfords accommodation for the sharp corners 18 and permits the outer curved surface of the segments 13 to lit snugly against. the inner curved surface of the box 10. This snug it with the raised part la on the bottom of the box and the depression 15 on the cover, serves to hold the. packin segments snugly in position and effectivey prevents dlsplacement or movement 0 the parte. 100
`'lthe cover 11, at its upper outer edge is provided with a circular recess 20 adapted to accommodate the projection formed by the groove 17, so that the boxes will nest together as shown in Figure d.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capableof various modiiications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made 119 ed to contact, and a lateral groove at th'e base of said upstanding wall without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim afll novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in View of the prior art. WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A container adapted to hold packing segments, the container having an upstanding Wall with which the segments are adapt- Walll having a adapted to accommodate the the packing segments When container.
2. A container adapted to hold packing segments, the container having an upstand` ing Wall with which the segments are adapted `to contact, a bottom Wall having a depression in the outer edge adapted to accommodate the square edges of the packing segments when in place in the container, and said bottom Wall having a substantially central raised portion adapted to engage the inner `surfaces of the segments.
3. A container adapted to hold packing segments7 the container having an upstanding Wall with which the segments are adapted to Contact, a bottom Wall having a depression in the outer edge adapted to accommosquare ed es of in place the date the square edges of the packing segments when in place in the container, and said bottom wall having a substantially central raised portion adapted to engage the inner surfaces of the segments, and a cover having a depressed portion in line with said raised portion and adapted to engage the upper inner surfaces of said packing segments.
Ll. A container adapted to hold acking segments having an upstanding side Wall with which the segments are adapted to contact, the container being in engagement with its marginal Wall, the container being providedwith a circular groove or depression in the outer edge of the bottom of the container, adapted to accommodate the square edges of the packing segments When in place in the container and having a cover With a circular depression at the upper outer edge adapted Ato accommodate the flange Aor projection in the box formed by the groove, the projection on the bottom of one box adapted to intert with the depression in the cover of another box in order to permit the boxes to nest together. Y
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 19 day of February 1923.
