PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER a. MILLER AND ELMER SMITH, or MANSFIELD", oHro.
METALLIC CONTAINER.
Application filed November 14, 1923. Serial No. 674,657.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WALTER R. MILLER and ELMER SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Rich land and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Containers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a con tainer constructed of metal throughout, and the main object of the invention is to provide a container that may be closed and sealed for shipment of goods long distances and so constructed that a set of the containers may be stored one within another so that they will take up less room when empty for return shipment.
The container is preferably constructed of sheet metal with reinforcements at top and bottom and has a tight fitting lid adapted to close the opening of the container and a lock for securing the lid.
' In the accompanying drawing, one embodiment of the invention is illustrated, and
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the container closed;
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary section along line 33 of Figure 1, and V Figure 4: is a similar section along line t4 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, reference numeral 10 represents the conical body of the container which is made in the shape of a downwardly tapering pail. The bottom 11 is flanged along its outer edge, as at 12, and preferably welded to the side 10 and reinforced by an internal ring 13.
The mouth of the pail is reinforced by an external angular band 1 1 likewise secured to the side 10 by electric or acetylene welding. The band 1 1 has an upstanding annular flange 15 of greater diameter than the body portion of the band so as to form a seat 16 for the lid. Spaced around the inner face of the upstanding flange 15 are positioned a number of blocks 17 of which four are shown in the drawing. These blocks are short, metallic pieces also welded to the flange 15 and preferably rounded or beveled on the under side, as at 18. The bottom of each block 17 is situated a certain distance above the seat 16, as best seen in Figure 3.
The lid 19 which is also made of steel or other metallic plate has the same diameter as the inner diameter of the flange 15 in order to fit closely therein. The plate has a reinforcing ring 20 around its edge of the same outer diameter as the lid itself and both the ring and the plate are provided with notches 21 corresponding in number and position to the blocks 17 around the flange 15. The added thickness of the plate 19 and the ring 20 corresponds to the height between the seat 16 and the under sides of the blocks 17. Reference numeral 22 represents ears or finger grips secured on top of the lid 19 for lifting the same out of the pail. Through the flange 15 are drilled two or more apertures 23, as seen in Figure 4,, adapted to receive a sealing wire runn ng through corresponding apertures in a lock 24-. This lock is of U-shaped cross section having an external lip 25 and an internal foot 26 spaced apart so that the lock rides over the edge of the flange 15. The foot 26 is of such an extent that it can enter one of the notches 21 in the reinforcing ring 20,
After the container has been filled, the lid 19 is placed in its seat 16 when the notches 21 are permitted to register with the respective block 17 around the flange 15. The lid will then slip down easily past the blocks and when resting in the seat it is turned by means of the finger grips 22 until the notches have passed under the blocks 17. This is facilitated by the provision of the rounded corners 18 on the blocks and the lid will thereupon be firmly held in its seat. The lid is turned until one of the notches faces the apertures 23provided in the flange 15 and the lock 24 is now dropped over the flange and its foot 26 permitted to enter one of the notches 21. A wire 27 is now drawn through the apertures in the lock 24 and the flange 15 and its ends drawn together and sealed, as at 28, with a lead seal in the usual manner. It is evident. that instead of a seal of this character a padlock may be used for securing the lid in position.
With the lids removed and packed or crated separately, it is evident that one container may be placed inside another, fitting snugly therein and that in this manner a dozen or more containers may be packed together for shipment when empty, taking up considerably less room than if shipped separately.
At times it may be preferable to use rivets or other securing means than the welding to firmly unite the sundry parts of which the container is made up;
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A container comprising a pail, a reinforcing band around the mouth of the pail having a flange forming a seat, a lid, a reinforcing ring around the edge of the lid fitting in the 'seat, and means for locking the lid in position. I
2. An all metal container comprising a pail, a reinforcing band around the mouth of the container of angular cross section and having an upstanding fiangeforming a seat, a lid of sheet metal, a reinforcing ring around the edge of the lid and fitting in said seat and means for locking the lid in position.
3. An all metal container comprising a pail, a reinforcing band around the mouth of the container of angular cross section and having an upstanding flange forming a seat, a lid of sheet metal, a reinforcing ring around the edge of the lid and fitting in said seat, and means for locking the lid in position, said means including, blocks projecting inwardly from said flange over said ring, notches being provided in the edge of the lid and the ring permitting the assembling of the lid in said seat.
4c. An all metal container comprising apail a reinforcing band around the mouth of the container of angular cross section and having an upstanding flange forming a seat, a lid of sheet metal, a reinforcing ring around the edge of the lidandfitting in said'seat, means for locking the lid in position, said means including blocks projecting inwardly from said flange over said ring, notches being provided in the edge of the lid and the ring permiting the assembling of the lid in said seat, and a U-shaped locking member adapted to ride over the edge of said flange and engage in one of said notches, said flange and lock having registering apertures adapted to receive a securing element.
5. An all metal container comprising a pail, a reinforcing band around the mouth of the container of angular cross section and having an upstanding flange forming a seat, a lid of sheet metal, a reinforcing ring around the edgevofthe lid and fitting in said seat, means for-looking the lid in position, said means including blocks projecting inwardly from said flange over said ring, notches being provided in the edge of the lid and the ring permitting the assembling of the lid in said seat, a- U-shaped locking member adapted to ride over the edge of said flange and'engag'e in one of said notches, said flange and lock having registering apertures adapted to receive a securing element, said blocks having beveled corners on their under sides, and handles on the upper side of said lid.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
l VALTER R. MILLER. ELMER SMITH.
