UNITED- STATES ALBERT J., BAYLES, OF MELROSE PARK, ILLINOIS;
BACK REST.
ApplicationL filed October 31, 1922 .V Serial No. 598,152.
To all lwhom 'it may @engem-,.1
` Be it known that I, ALBERT J. BAYLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable, portable back rests, and has particular reference to a back rest which is adapted to be used with any ordinary board seat, and can easily be detached when it is so desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a back rest that may be mounted on any form of seat, that is minus a back, and which is provided with a fiat seat.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a back rest, that may be adjusted to various positions so as to allow the user to sit in an upright position, or so adjust the back rest that he may lean back as far as desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable, portable back rest, that is strong, durable, simple and inexpensive in construction, and that is well adapted to the uses for which it is designed.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the drawings, wherein like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my back rest Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section for the purpose of illustration, and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of my seat in use.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the ypreferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates any form of seat such as is commonly used in row-boats and the like.
My rest comprises a pair of strap iron members 6 and 7, which are adapted to be placed at the top of the seat 5. The ends of the members 6 and 7 are bent around the edge of seat member 5 thereby forming hook shaped members 8 and 9V respectively. The strap iron members 6 and 7 are twisted at 10 and 11, respectively, near their rear ends to form the arms 12 and 13.
The numeral 14 designates a back rest which is carried by the substantially, vertically curved-- members 15V and *16. A-'cla'mp member'19,'v composed of the: plates 18a'nd 17, which are held together by means of bolts 20 and 21, are clamped at any desired height on the curved members 15 and 16. 'Ihe plate 17 is provided with spaced ears 23 and 24 near one end, and 25 and 26 near the opposite end thereof. The arms 12 and 13 of the strap iron members 6 and 7 are adapted to be received between the spaced ears, and bolts are passed therethrough to form a hinge connection between the strap iron members 6 and 7 and the back rest member 14. Pivoted arms 27 and 28 are provided at one end with cut out portions or notches 29 and are pivoted to the lower end of the members 15 and 16 by means of a thumb bolt 30. The pivoted members 27 and 28 are provided with a plurality of apertures 31 to allow Various adjustments of the back rest 14.
In use, the back rest is mounted on the seat 5, by hooking the hook shaped member 8 and the strap iron members 6 and 7 over one edge of the seat 5, and the plate members 17 and 18 are adjusted in any desired height on the curved back members 15 and 16, and the pivoted arms 27 and 28, which are provided at one end with a cutout portion or notch 29, brought into engagement with the opposite edge of the seat 5. It will be seen that by means of the apertures 31, and the screw 30, the rest lmay be adjusted to any desired angle. It will thus be seen, that I have devised a very simple, adjustable and portable back rest that may be applied to any form of flat seat, and which is adjustable to any angle, and which cannot possibly slip out of place accidentally When in use.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein described and claimed is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a back rest, a pair of plates adjustably clamped to said back rest between its ends, a hook shaped member pivotally connected to One of said plates, and means for adjustably holding said back rest in a rigid position.
2. In combination, a back rest, a pair of plates adjustably connected to said back rest between its ends, a hook shaped member piv-k otally connected to one of said plates, and an arm pivotally connected tothe lowerv end of the back rest extending upwardly at an incline.
3. A seat attachment comprising a hookshaped member adapted to be connected to a seat, a back rest adjustably connected thereto having its lower end extending be- 10W the seat and an arm plvotally connected to the lower end of said back rest; said arm extending upwardly at an incline to engage said seat.
In testimony whereof I aiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT J. BAYLES.
