WILLIAM J'. BARRETT, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT. i
mummli'rnn TARGET.
Application inea mivember I4, 192s. serial uacvegm.
i and has for an object to provide an improved target which, may vloe used -in poor lights orv even in darkness. It is also an ob'ect of the. invention provide a device o `this character which y1s very simple in construction and to which the Ordina electric Hash lam may be easily attache anddetached for illuminating thec jt'arget.-
' With the foregoing and other obJects 1n 2o View, I have devised the construction illustrated ,in the ac :cor'np'anying drawing, forming a part 'o5 this speclcation, simllar reference characters being employed throughout the various "igures to `indicate corresponding elements. In thisdrawing,
Fig. 1 is av side elevation of a portion of a levelers rod and my improved target appliedthereto a portion of the front wall of the tar et being broken away to more clearly s ow the construction.
Fig. 2 isa similar `View of af portion of a target showing a-slightly diierent means `for securing the flash lamp to the target, and
. lFig.- 3 is a transversesection substantially .on line 3 3' of-Fig. 1. e In this drawing 10 representsaportion of any desired type `of levelers rod graduated in the usual manner, as shown at 11.1 Mounted nto slide Aonthis rod is a target 12 upon which the leveler trains his instrument for reading the levels in the usual manner. This tar` et has in the front wall thereof a rectangu ar opening 13 through which the graduations 11 are visible and is also pro- '45 vided with the usual horizontal zero line '14.
Theusual clamping screw 15 is rovided for ,clamping the target to the ro iii any desired position.
In using these instruments in poor lights as incellars, on dark days or in mines, 1t is often ve diicult for the man operating the instr `ent 'to see the target and to train this instrunent on the tar et.4 -To overcome formed a levelers rods',
provide in the front wall of this target a cross 17. .This cross is preferably formed by cutting away the front walls ofthe charn-v ber and placing back of the opening thus iece of glass 19- to prevent entrance of irt to the chamber. The glass I may be secured in the chamber by any suitable means, such as guides 19. The hori- 'zontal arms 20 are on the zero line 14 and preferably extend -equal amounts on opposite sldes of th1s line to assist in easily bringing this line into'alignment with the horizontal hair ofthe level.v The opposite ends of these arms are tapered, as showni at 21, and fend in a small narrow slot r22 on the line. To assist inmore roperly positionling the rod-I prefer to a so provide verti cal arms 23 at right angles to the horizontal line and similar -to these arms.
In order that this' cross `may be easily tvisible'in poor lights I provide means for l illuminatin it fromvthe interior f the chamber. I pre er touse for this purpose an ordinary electric iash'lamp indicated at 24. In the lower walls of the chamber is fan opening forA insertion of the light end of the lamp so thatthe light rays romthe lam are projected into the chamber thoroug y illuminatin the cross, and means is provided for detac ably securing this lamp to the target so that itmaybe easily applied and-'removed as desired. In Fig. 1 I have shownspring clips 25 on l opposite sides of the lamp provided with oil'sets 26 adapted ltoengage between the grooves `formed by the threads 27 on the cap of the lamp 'so that the lamp ma be secured in position by merely forcing 1n the light end thereof to the position shownv in Fig.
1', and it maybe vremoved by merely pull- 95 i ing vit downwardly. In F1g.'2^ I have shown a Ithreaded sleeve A28 surrounding theopening in' the chamber to engage the threaded end of the casing of the lamp so thatstheclamp may be easily screwedv into 1004 position or unscrewed there-from. To insure proper illumination of the cross I. prefer 'to provide a curved reiector 2 9 in` the v `back wall of th'e chamber, and the innersurface of this reflector will pref-'105 erably be painteda dull-white. This relector. ishowever,\not -necessary as the inner surface of the rear wall 30 ma be this dilicultyIhave provi ed the target with' painted a dull white if' preferred. hese 5g' a chamber 16 on one sideof the lrod and .light surfaces being illuminated by the lamp the cross is clearly visible through the lens of the level. By having the arms of the cross extend ori-opposite sides of the zero line the horizontal hair of the level is clearly visible extending longitudinally of the horizontal arms of the cross as the light is on both sides of the hair, and it is very easy to determine when the target is in position to bring the horizontal line 14 over the hair of the instrument. The Vertical arms of the cross clearly show the vertical hair of the instrument in the same way, indicating whether the rod is held vertically. It is not necessary that the' glass covering the cross be clear as it may be ground glass,
- which will clearly show the threads of the instrument if illuminated from the rear.
This device is clearly visible in all kinds of lights. The electric light may be easily applied or removed, and it is safe to use 1n all locations such as mines where there mighty be dangerof an explosion from gas should an open light be used.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
1. A 'target adapted to slide on a 'graduated rod provided with a chamber at one side of said rod, a transparent cross in the front wall of said chamber having vertical and horizontal arms, and means for illuminating said cross.
2. A target for a levelers rod providedv on the front wall thereof with a cross having vertical and horizontal arms, and means for illuminting said arms.
3. A target for a levelers rod provided on the front wall thereof with -a cross having vertical and horizontal arms, said horizontal arms being tapered at the ends thereof wlth narrow slots leading from the ends of the tapers.
4. A target for a levelers rodv having a chamber, a cross in the front wall of said chamber having vertical and horizontal arms, said cross being adapted for trans mission of light, and means within the chamber for illuminating the cross.
5. A target for a levelers rod having al chamber, said target having a horizontal zero line on the face of the front wall thereof a relatively narrow horizontal window in said front wall adapted for transmission of light and extending on both sides of said line, the ends of said windowftapering toward'said line, and means in the chamber for illuminating thewindow.
6. A target for a levelers rod adapted for sliding adjustment on said rod and. provided with a chamber at one side thereof, a trans- -parent cross in the front wall thereof having extending on opposite. sides of said line and' provided with narrow slots in the ends of the arms in alignment with said line, said cross being adapted for transmission of li means in said chamber for illuminating said cross.
8. A target for a levelers rod adapted for sliding adjustment on said rod and provided with a chamber at one side thereof, said chamber being provided in the front wall thereof with a cross adapted for transmission of light and having horizontal arms on the zero line of the target, an electric. flash light for illuminatingv said cross, and means for detachably mounting said light in said target.
.9. A target for a levelers rod adapted for sliding adjustment on said rod :and provided with a chamber at one side thereof, said chamber being provided in the front wall thereof with a cross adapted for transmission of light and having .horizontal arms on the zero line of the target, the lower wall of said chamber being 'provided with an opening adapted for insertion of the light end of an electric flash lamp, and means` for detachably securing an electric flash lamp in said opening to illuminate said cross.
`10. A target lfor a levelers rod adapted t, and t forv sliding adjustment on said-rod and provided with a chamber at one side thereof, said chamber being provided in the front wall thereof with a cross adapted for transmission of li ht and having horizontal arms on the zero line of the targetand extending on opposite sides thereof, said arms being provided at their ends with narrow slots on said line, and means' for detachably connecting an electric flash lamp to said target to project its light into said chamber and illuminate said cros's. v
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature;
