This invention relates to warning signs having a main lamp and an auxiliary lamp, and more particularly to such signs wherein a visual indication is given upon failure of the main lamp.
My invention is directed to a sign of the character stated of simple and inexpensive construction in which the lamps and associated parts are mounted in a novel manner such that a compact and convenient arrangement of parts results, the sign as a whole is relatively inexpensive, and ready access is had to parts requiring replacement or adjustment. Further objects and advantages will appear from the detailed description.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a warning sign of the type used to indicate a boulevard; Figure 2 is a rear elevation of this same sign; Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view of the sign; Figure 4 is a sectional view along the line 44 of Figure 3; and Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view.
Auxiliary lamps have heretofore been provided in warning signs of various types, and these auxiliary lamps have been arranged to take over the functions of the main lamp upon failure thereof. Various means have been used to eiTect this result.
The apparatus disclosed herein, moreover, includes an indicator in the form of a third lamp, which indicator is lighted only when the main lamp is burned out. This indicator lamp is positioned so that it illuminates a small lens or bulls eye visible from the back of the warning sign, and thus a service man may ascertain the condition of the main lamp in the warning sign through glancing at the back thereof. The sign is also provided with a shield or partition of some sort between the indicating means and the main or auxiliary source of illumination, so that the flashing of the main lamp will not i1- luminate the indicator lens.
In the particular embodiment of this invention illustrated herewith, a warning sign is shown having a shell or casing I! provided with a front face or cover I This face may be hinged to the shell at the top thereof, as by hinges l2 and I3, and clamping means I4 and I5 are then provided to hold the face closed. The face has in the center thereof an opening H5 in which is positioned a lens l1, and above and below this opening are provided other openings in the shape of letters, as for example l8 and I9. When the sign is illuminated, as by the main lamp 20, the central lens will flash a warning signal, and the words above and below this lens, as Stop Blvd, will be readily apparent;
The main lamp 20 is mounted upon a shelf 2|, and has mounted adjacent thereto an auxiliary lamp 22 Behind these two lamps, and separated therefrom by a shield or partition 23, is an indicator lamp 24 so situated as to illuminate an indicator lens or bulls eye 25, which lens is positioned in the back of the sign. The lamps 20, 22 and 24 are all of common commercial design, and are mounted in threaded sockets 26, 21 and 28 on the shelf 2|. The shield 23 may also be conveniently mounted on the shelf 2|,
as by the bracket member 29 and bolt 30. Im-
mediately below the shelf 2| is provided a box or container 3|, which container has therein appropriate circuit control means, and a socket member is provided in one side of the container into which may be inserted the plug 34, which plug is attached to the extension cord 35 leading from the source of electrical power used to illuminate the sign.
Should the main lamp 211 burn out the auxiliary lamp 22 will thereupon continue proper illumination of the face of the warning sign, while the indicator lamp 24 will furnish intermittent illumination t0 the lens 25, which illumination serves to call attention to the fact that the main lamp has burned out and should be replaced, this being accomplished by appropriate circuit control means previously referred to.
What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In apparatus of the character described, a
. casing having a front closure member provided with openings for giving visual indications, said casing having a rearward opening for giving a visual indication, a shelf within said casing, two lamps mounted upon said shelf, a third lamp mounted upon said shelf between and in rear of said two lamps, a shield mounted upon said shelf between said two lamps and said third lamp and forming with said casing an enclosure for said third lamp efiective for excluding from said rearward opening light from either of said two lamps, a container supported by said shelf therebeneath and adapted to contain circuit control means for said lamps.
2. In apparatus of the character described, a casing having a front closure member provided with openings for giving visual indications, said casing having a rearward opening for giving a visual indication, a shelf within said casing secured to the back wall thereof, two lamps mounted upon the forward portion of said shelf, a
said casing, a shelf within said casing and extending forward thereof, two lamps mounted upon the forward portion of said shelf, a third lamp mounted upon the rearward portion of said shelf between said two lamps, and a shield mounted upon said shelf and forming therewith and with said casing an enclosure for said third lamp effective for excluding from said second lens light from either of said two lamps.
