COMBINATION LICENSE-TAG- HOLDEB AND TAIL-LIGHT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application led February 8, 1918. Serial No. 216,038.
To all lwhom it may camera:
Be it known that I, RAY A. SoL'r, a citizenof the United States, residing at Treichlers, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination License-Tag Holders and Tail-Lights; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use 4the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combined license tag holders and tail lights and has for one of lts objects the provision of a device of this character, whereby the numbers and characters of a license tag may be illuminated from the tail light so that the same may be visible from a great distance at night time.
Another object of this invention is t'he provision of a casing sup a transparent panel or tag provi ed with opaque characters and letters and which casin is adapted to be illuminated by the tail light which is so connected to the casing that the rays of light therefrom will shineinto the casmg in rear of the tag, so as to eilicientlyilluminate the characters and numbers thereof, making them readable at a great distance at night tlme.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a combined license tag holder and tail light of the above stated character .which shall be simple, durable, and eiicient,
and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in whichr- Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a combined license tag holder and tail light constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken 0n the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates an elongated casing, having one of its ends closed by an end wall, while its opposite end and front wall are open. The opening in the front wall of the casing 1 is of such a size that it forms retaining flanges 2. Guide members 3 are soldered or otherwise secured to the top and bottom walls of the casing 1 in spaced relation to the retaining flanges 2 to form'guide ways for receiving` the license tag 4 which is constructed from glass or other transparent material having coated or otherwise applied thereon opaque characters and numbers as clearly lillustrated in Fig. 1. rlhe retaining flanges 2 are lined with felt or other similar material 5 to protect the license tag 4 and l which tag is forced thereagainst b means of leaf springs 6 that are secur to the guide members 3. rllhe springs 6 have felt or other adding secured to their free ends and which engages the license tag 4. From this construction it will be noted that the license tag 4 is firmly held within the casing l and prevented from rattling. A removable cover 7 is placed over the open end of the casing 1 and is secured thereto by means of a bolt 8 passing through the cover and casing `and. receiving the wing nut 9. T he casing 1 is provided with a reflector 10 on lts rear wall so that the light within the casing will be reected through the license tag.
The closed end of the casing 1 is provided with an opening 11 surrounded by an internally threaded collar 12. A tail light casing 13 of any desired construction has an opening in one side thereof and is surrounded by an externally threaded collar 14 that is adapted to be threaded into the collar 11 for securing the tail light 13 to the casing 1.
The tail light casing 13 has a lens 15 secured in any desired manner to the open front Wall thereof and is preferably red. A curved reHector 16 is carried by the tail light casing 13 in such a manner that the rays from thev lighting source 17 will be directed into the casing 1 and also throu h the lens 15. The li hting source 17 may e in the form of an elctric lamp or may be a kerosene lamp.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that means have been provided whereby the light from the tail light can be conveyed into the license tag holder so that it will shine through the license tag making the characters and numbers thereof visible at a considerable distance at night time.
While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will -be understood that minor changes in construction, combination, and arrangement of parts may be made Without depart4- ing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.,
Having thus described my invention what Y A device of the character set forth comprising a casing, a transparent tag carried by said casing and having opaque charac- Lamme ters, an internally threaded collar formed on one end of the casing, a tail light casing having an opening in one side thereof, an externally threaded collar formed on the tail light lcasing and threaded into the iirst 20 ln testimony whereof l aiiiX my signature 25 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
