Description

C. F. BOETTCHER.
DISPLAY SIGN.
APPLlCATlON FILED JUNE 30. 1921.
1,396,245. Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DISPLAY-SIGN.
Application filed June 30, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL FRED BOETTCHER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Henry, in the county of Scotts Bluff and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display- Signs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to display signs and more particularly to the illuminating means for the same.
An important object is to provide a display sign having novel means whereby the number of electric lights necessary to illuminate the sign is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display sign in which the electric lights are so located that the entire matter to be displayed is uniformly and brilliantly illuminated.
Further, the invention aims to provide a display sign which is neat in appearance, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved s1 '11.
Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same,
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the same.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention the numeral 5 gener ally designates the improved sign which is in the nature of a casing having upper and lower walls 6 and 8 respectively between which end walls 10 are arranged. The upper and lower walls 6 and 8 of the casing may be joined by spaced bolts 11 extended through the end portions of the walls 6 and 8 which as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 extend beyond the end walls 10.
The spaced parallel sides 12 are formed of glass or other transparent material and Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 481,724.
are received within longitudinally extending grooves 14 in the inner sides of the walls 6 and 8 and are securely held in position by the fastening bolts 11. In carrying out the invention, the inner surface of each glass 12 may be formed with a coating of paint and may be provided on its outer side with suitable display matter. The coating of paint on the inner side of each glass does not prevent the light from shining through the glass but prevents the electric light bulbs 15 and the reflectors 16 from being seen from the outerside of the casing.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, one reflector 16 is arranged at each end of the casing and is secured thereto by a base plate 17. The electric light bulb is in turn extended through the reflector 16 and is threaded into a socket 18 extended through the end wall and having connection with an electric light wire 20.
The inner sides of the improved display sign may be provided with a coating of reflecting material so that the light rays from the bulbs 15 arranged at the ends of the casing will be uniformly projected through the oppositely arranged transparent sides 12. By having the light bulbs 15 at the ends of the casing the display signs 12 are brilliantly and uniformly illuminated, so that the display matter applied to the same may be conveniently seen.
I claim A display sign comprising upper and lower walls having their longitudinal edge portions formed with longitudinal grooves opening out through the ends of the walls, a pair of spaced parallel glass sides secured in said grooves and terminating short of the ends of said upper and lower walls, end walls arranged flatly in contact with the ends of said glass sides and engaging said upper and lower walls, light bulbs carried by said end walls and having inwardly directed re flectors directing the light rays toward each other whereby to uniformly illuminate the glass sides, and pairs of bolts extending through the terminal portions of said upper and lower sides outwardly of said end walls and detachably holding the end walls and said sides firmly in position.
